My prediction : assuming they are still on the board in the second round, the Bears will draft Omarion Hampton or Kaleb Johnson. Lots of different things can happen, of course in terms of trades, etc, but the new coach understands the importance of BOTH a superior O line and an elite RB.
I'd be fine with that. But elite RBs don't matter without a good OL, unless they are also elite pass catchers and route runners. With a good OL, they can absolutely be difference makers.

You need to have two starting safeties… you get rid of Byard and you’ll need two new safeties. You keep Byard and you only need one (more) starting safety. That’s the point.

Don’t count on Brisker. You should already consider his role needing my to be filled.
So, do you have an issue with adding a free agent safety or cutting Byard?

This quote was before the '24 season and wasnt about his rookie year. He was on track to play more deep zone in '24 though before he got hurt (granted it was 5 games), I think Eberflus wanted to use him and Byard as interchangeable Safetys as much as possible which is what Flus' scheme wants at the S position.

Eberflus "cover 2" played more cover 3 than any other single coverage, particularly in '22 and when they had Brisker play deep zone he would often get quarter responsibilities when possible instead of having to handle a deep half. In my world the S thats in the box a lot more than the other S and gets pushed away from deep half where possible is the SS.

Briskers not great in deep zone coverage and moving out of the box is taking away his best attributes in my opinion. I mentioned in another post almost no S in the NFL are only in the box or only in deep zone coverage but Brisker should be at minimum spending half his time close to the line of scrimmage which is a ratio he has kept every season of his career so far.
Yes I know that the quote is in reference to Brisker playing with Byard. It has nothing to do with his rookie season. Its already been established that Brisker played both FS snd SS his rookie year.

You outlined that he was mostly SS, I cant remember exactly but that is fine and not worth arguing. As far as Im concerned he isnt physically going to hold up being used like a mini linebacker in the box.

Move him and replace him with a guy that has proven ability to stay healthy and plays well against the run, which is what Moehrig does.

I like Briskers grit and energy on the team, I think he can be salvaged. Let him play FS this year and if he fails we will find a "pure" FS in 2026 draft.

I think youre over analyzing the term FS and SS for schemes that dont make a strong distinction between the 2/ want 2 interchangeable S on the field. What do you believe the FS does in Dennis Allen's scheme? When you say move Brisker to FS what do you envision this is asking him to do?

In the box closer to the line of scrimmage safety vs single high post, center fielder safety.

One should be better at run support and the other is more for coverage support. I cant say that I know Dennis Allen's scheme well enough to say which guy is exactly where but since you obviously seem to have a coach's perspective feel free to break it down.

Then tell me exactly why you believe Kevin Byard is able to play the position but Brisker absolutely can't.

EDIT: that doesnt mean the Bears should be married to Byard as the other S, it just means dont ask to limit Briskers strengths because you want a change at another position.

I think moehrig + brisker could work. I don’t think it’s the best use of resources but it’s not dead on arrival.

Honestly if Brisker was able to stay healthy I wouldnt even consider Moehrig. I would instead look to the draft for a better safety option (I really like Lathom from OSU).

Since we dont know about Brisker I would rather get a proven player that plays at a high level over gambling on a 50/50 draft pick. That way at least we arent looking for two safeties next year.

Cutting Byard. Get another year out of him.

I would personally draft a safety in the late rounds as insurance for Brisker and then address the position again next year.

But going for a FA safety this year is fine, but it’s not what I’d do.

Overall, there is a lot to like here. It’s hard to not fall in love with an offseason where the Bears land Trey Smith. A few things to consider…

Omarion Hampton reminds me of Josh Jacobs. I’m just not sold on the idea of the Bears drafting a RB in the first 3 rounds. There are a few veterans that can be had at a low cost, like Nick Chubb or even AJ Dillon. Are we writing off Roschon Johnson? Will he wear a guardian cap?

Javon Hargrove has to come back from a torn tricep - that’s a brutal injury to a guy that is 32 years old. This draft class is loaded with defensive linemen. The Bears might be better off using one of their 2nds, their 3rd, or consider trading up from the 3rd to capitalize on the deep talent pool. I don’t hate this idea though, as long as he passes all his medicals.

Evan Brown is an interesting target, because there is value in having guys with experience in Ben Johnson’s system. His positional flexibility is a major plus too. I’m not sure he’s an improvement over Coleman Shelton though. If the Bears aren’t going target a veteran like Ryan Kelly or Drew Dalman, I’d prefer the Bears use one of their second or third round picks on a center. I have my eyes on Greg Zabel, Tate Ratledge, & Clay Webb.

Jedrick Wills would be a great low-risk, high reward addition. Will Braxton Jones be ready to start the season? Maybe he could kick inside to guard - it worked for Mekhi Becton. He’s going to want a good opportunity to compete for a starting role wherever he signs.

The Bears have to do something at safety, because they can’t rely on Brisker staying healthy. I don’t think Tre'von Moehrig would be the wisest use of the Bears cap space. I’m OK with Kevin Byard for now, and has proven himself as a leader. Maybe they could target a good depth piece like Ashtyn Davis, who has special team value too.

I agree. But having a three down RB who is capable of breaking tackles and also breaking long runs will give the offense a new dimension.

2:29 AM. Clearly, when the best work gets done…

Kevin Byard was in the top half for starting safeties in the league on a 5 win team last year. I don’t understand the fan logic in getting rid of him immediately. Sure, he’s about to turn 32 and his best years are behind him, but he’s one of the guys who didn’t suck last year, he’s productive, and he’s got a modest salary for this year. There’s absolutely no reason to have a sense of urgency to replace him now and call it a "money-saving move" when you can what you paid for, so you don't have to double Byard's money to pay another guy and expect Brisker to stay on the field for a whole season. You're back at square one and you're doubling Byard's salary for it, which is stupid spending. Safeties will look a lot better when you fix the front 7.

On top of that, the Raiders sit at 99.7 mil in cap space (number per USA Today, OTC says 99.2) before this supposed 20+ mil cap jump. Exactly why are they letting their star 25-year-old safety walk out the door, and why do you assume they won't try to keep him? And then on top of it move Brisker to FS when he can’t stay on the field and when he’s far more effective in the box? Woof.

Restructuring Edmunds when this year pays the last big chunk of his guaranteed money makes no sense. Same with Kmet. If for whatever reason you have to move on from one/both this time next year, adding void years/pushing guaranteed money back sets you back, which would be dumb to do for a team presently with a shitload of cap space.

Hargrave makes no sense. Don’t see Poles benching Gervon when he took a decent stride from year 1 to year 2 while playing out of position, especially when one upgrade at DE and getting Billings back will give him better match-ups/opportunities.

Anybody who read Brad Biggs’ article about Ryan Bates’ arthritis and injury and how he went to a foreign country for advanced treatment only to have the pain be worse than before and the strength not returning even with adequate rest—wouldn’t plan for Ryan Bates to be here. The guy's toast, and a waste of salary and roster space.

Mykel Williams is fine. I get why some have reservations about him being slower, but his tape against Kelvin Banks (and production overall) is why he’s considered top 10-15. That being said, if Poles goes edge, I think he'd like the Tennessee kid more, because he's the speed rusher, and Dennis Allen heavily schemes 3-2-6 Cover 0 disguised blitz on 3rd and mid/long to match modern speed with speed, and Sweat isn't your stand up-speed rusher in that package.

Jonah S is fine too. Arm length size queens can take a big sigh of relief with him. 34 inch arms means he MUST be good at blocking, so I've been told.

A halfback and a backup 3rd/4th string off-ball linebacker in the top 75 are just unnecessary luxuries. Why do we need more receiving TEs and not a blocking TE? Who’s the blocking TE? Because if its the 11 million dollar guy, that's more wasted money/talent.

I guess there are conflicting reports out there. This is what I read about Bates.

According to the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs, Bates had to go to Panama while on the IR to receive stem cell therapy (stem cell treatment is not approved in the United States). Bates' shoulder structurally is fine, but it was revealed that he was dealing with arthritis that continued to worsen each time he returned to the field, prompting the team to place him on the IR.

Bates noted to Biggs that the decision was the best choice for his injury and the shoulder has since felt much better, even calling it life-changing. Bates returned to the field as a starter in Week 10 before suffering a concussion seven offensive snaps into the following game.”

This is directly from Bates via the website of the medical facility where he received the treatment.

“Reflecting on his decision, Bates stated, “It wasn’t cheap. But it was an investment in myself. I’m investing in my body, my career now, and my future career.” This sentiment captures the critical mindset of athletes facing mounting physical challenges while striving to sustain peak performance. For Bates, the investment proved transformative.

Within 72 hours of undergoing stem cell therapy, he noticed significant improvement in his shoulder’s mobility and overall condition. “What I was doing wasn’t working. This was a solution, and my shoulder feels 1,000 times better,” Bates remarked, underscoring the profound impact of the procedure at Auragens.”

We’ll see how it goes, but I’m skeptical stem cell injections are going to fix degenerative arthritis and I wouldn’t trust a blurb from the website of the company that sells the procedure. I think Bates will be given camp to show if he’s healthy but the team will move forward as if he won’t be, maybe he will surprise people be good healthy enough to be decent iOL depth - the team could sure use that.

Brisker played free safety and strong safety his rookie year. Eberflus stated from the beginning that both he and Eddie Jackson would be interchangeable in his cover 2 defense. Regardless of how the snap count balanced out at the end of the season, Brisker can play FS and is open to playing it.

He will be better served if they move him out of the box. Even that may not help him stay healthy but it is worth a shot. There is no reason to keep saying he can't play FS and the better choice is to keep the overpriced 32 year old instead of finding a long term solution.
There's no reason to say he started 15 games at FS his rookie season either but you did. :homerbush:

That's fine, I also considered taking a Safety in the draft as well, its just a mock. I personally liked the effort that Byard played with and his professionalism.

It was a tough decision but I chose to take the $7M of cap space and put it toward a much younger player that is a much better player in run defense.

It also helps Brisker imo and I think Moehrig + a healthy Brisker could be a much better duo than injured Brisker + old Byard.
I got you but i'll go with a healthy Brisker and save $7 mil this year by sticking with Byard who played well for us last year. Now after next year things will definitely need to change.

What do you think about Javon Holland who played for Miami last year? I like both him and Moehrig but not sure what each will be looking for in free agency.

First thanks for the well thought out reply

1. I've never like Roschon to be honest, he seems like a great teammate but he's slow and not really that impressive as a "power" rusher. Now that he's concussion prone, I'm definitely writing him off.

Please no more ex-packers for at least a decade, as for Chubb I did consider him and it might be worth a $2M for 1 year deal to see if he can comeback from two brutal injuries.

Ultimately I really want Kaleb Johnson or Omarion Hampton early in the draft, or Ollie Gordon/Kalel Mullings late. A big bruising back that can consistently gain 2-3 yards on 3rd and short or 1st and goal.

2. The Draft is as big of a roll of the dice as signing Hargrave. The difference is we know for sure that Hargrave is elite when healthy. I agree it might be wise to grab Tyliek Williams or Alfred Collins in round two but on top of not knowing if they will succeed, it also prevents us from getting a different player with that draft pick.

It's very unlikely that any 2nd round rookie DT will produce at Hargraves level in year one anyway. I want this team to add as much talent as possible as soon as possible to take advantage of the rookie QB contract.

3. Grey Zabel was gone by #39 in my mock drafts as well as Donavan Jackson, thus I took Saviinaea. I'm not familiar with Clay Webb so he wasn't an option and I thought Routlege was a guard only so no consideration was given to him.

I prefer to draft a center that actually has extensive snaps playing the position and making line calls. I want a guy with the brain for the position as well as the physical ability to hike a ball. Most of these guards just add a the skill without the experience.

4. Ultimately the Byard move was for cap flexibility and I thought this mock through before the recent cap increase. Perhaps the NFL has solved the problem and the Bears can afford to keep a solid player on the roster after all.

With that said, he still isn't going to be here long at his age and he slowed down a lot toward the end of the year, so adding a guy that's seven years younger, much better in run defense, and the fact he could possibly salvage Brisker's career makes much more sense to me.

5. Finally... I watched the Commanders get within 1 game of the superbowl after having the #2 pick in the same season. I don't agree with anyone that takes the "the Bears aren’t ready now" mentality. I don't want to try a slow and steady rebuild approach. They have enough money and draft picks to flip this roster and become contenders this season.

Look again at the final roster I put together and tell me where the weakness is that shows they couldn't compete with Philly or Detroit heading into next season. Yes I know it depends on guys staying healthy but that goes without saying.

With smart drafting and aggressive moves in free agency this team can become contenders, THIS YEAR
