According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Chicago Blackhawks have placed Steve Montador on waivers this morning. Montador has not appeared in a game since February 7th, 2012 and was recently activated off injured reserve.

Every team will have a chance to claim him, if he clears waivers his rights will be retained by the Blackhawks and he will likely report to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. Montador is on the second year of a four year deal which counts for $2.75 million against the salary cap each year.

With a logjam of defenseman in the Blackhawks system, it must have been harder and harder for the Blackhawks organization to waste a roster slot on Montador if Joel Quenneville did not plan on getting him into the defensive rotation. Six teams in the Western Conference currently carry eight or more defenseman, only two of those teams are in a playoff spot, so I'm sure the Blackhawks are fine with carrying seven defenseman.

This is strictly a conditioning stint, but that can always change if the Blackhawks decide to use the added space to call up another player from Rockford such as Ben Smith or Jimmy Hayes and they play well.

Since re-entry waivers is no longer applicable under the new CBA, if Montador is not claimed he can be recalled at any time without risk.

Why risk losing him for nothing? I am sure he could be traded for at least a pick.

He's getting sent down to probably play/get some game time.

I highly doubt anyone will pick him up coming back from the concussion...but would be sweet if someone did

I thought he'd financially be off the cap books if he was waived, though, I thought?

If he stays down this year...yeah...but I don't think you can hide him there next year.

If/when they recall him, a team can claim him for 50% of his cap hit...and Hawks get the other half...right?

Good move by the Hawks here. Who cares if he gets picked up (i doubt he will though also..that's a risky waiver pick up). The "return" isn't a concern because the "return" would be a useless pick in a very late round.

Best for Montador also as he needs to get ice time on the farm. And if he does get picked up its good for him also because he might get ice time with some other team. Hes not going to get it here. Its actually the right thing for the club to do not only for the club itself but for Montador.

I could see some defense weak team or young team looking for a vet presence taking him when he's called back up at 1/2 price.

He counts against the Cap no matter where he is now under the new CBA. No team is going to risk 2.75 mil for two more years with previous concussions. He's going to go see if he can still play.

There is no more re-entry waivers in the new CBA.

So if/when he gets called back up...does he have to pass waivers again?

And if another team claims him on re-entry...the other team is on the hook for the full 2.75?

No, there are zero re entry waivers. He's recalled he comes straight back, no passing go.

I don't get why we'd be still having him on the cap if he's not even playing here. Where's the logic in that?

surprise surprise, he cleared. No team is that dumb.

I'm surprised the Isles didn't take him to go higher off the cap floor.
