We went to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo this weekend. I can say it's a good movie. But I'm still not sure how I feel about it. As was mentioned it was the fastest 2.5 hours I've ever had. So much was left out that I felt underwhelmed, but I feel like that is unjustly critical because of everything they packed into it. It left me wanting more which is a good thing, but it also left me thinking there was no charecter development. The movie was done wonderfully. The imagrey was at times exactly what I pictured when reading the books. The casting was amazing. Really well done, and Fincher outdid himself with the directing. I think if I wouldn't have read the books first I would have been blown away by the movie, but since I knew everythign that was left out, I was left with an unfinished picture and wanting to see and feel some of my favorite things from the book. I honestly am going to have to watch it a few more times to really know how I feel about it. It's a great movie, I just don't can't decide on how great.

I never read the books and had only heard the hype about it before seeing it. Maybe that I was so shocked at the graphic nature of some scenes. I did feel it was a great movie but still believe some of the most graphic scenes could have been done in a matter where you envision the graphic nature rather then actually witnessing it. I agree with the acting, scenery and directing. Excellent and the time was never a factor. I never looked at my watch nor did I know it was that long going into it.

I was so prepared for over the top graphicness that I did not think that it was nearly as much as it could have been.

What was everyone's favorite film of 2011?

The best film I saw was Drive... here is my list (copied and pasted from elsewhere hehe):

Drive - this was an excellent movie... superb acting and a very tense action/thriller. I don't know if anyone in our theater even shifted in their seats they were so completely engrossed in the film. It was also smart & creative (use of light/sunlight as symbolism & the soundtrack as examples). I think this was overall the best film I saw in 2011. I definitely recommend it... it's not for the squeamish though; it is bloody & violent.

Other favorites:

Bridesmaids - absolutely hilarious, great cast.

Crazy, Stupid, Love - funnier and better than I anticipated.

Midnight in Paris - did not want to watch this one, but it was fun for a booknerd.

Sherlock Holmes, A Game of Shadows - just reviewed this one recently in this thread... another fun, smart, & well-acted Sherlock Holmes movie... it you liked the first, you'll like this one.

Paranormal Activity 3 - I like to see scary movies, and unlike the crap I saw this year (Don't Be Afraid of the Dark & Dream House), this one was actually pretty scary.

I also just watched Contagion this weekend and it was pretty good.

I don't think I saw enough movies in 2011 to even comment about it.

I did go to take the little one to the new Winnie the Pooh and it was excellent. I may have seen one other new movie this year (aside from dvd releases, but even those were mostly older movies I watched.

Ok, you read the books. What about the Mrs?

My wife was close to walking out twice.

In regards to favorite movies I saw in 2011:

Moneyball was surprisingly decent considering I loved the book but couldn't find an actual story for it.

X-Men First Class was also better then I thought.

Limitless was a great original movie which todays seems to be lacking in most major motion pictures.

First Class, in my opinion is the best X-men movie they've made yet. Fassbender was freaking awesome... that movie made me a fan of Magneto.

Actually enjoyed Limitless more than I though I would - it was a good "stretch" role for Bradley Cooper

My girlfriend and I watching this last weekend and I actually couldn't believe just how many times I genuinely laughed out loud. Very well done and John Cleese could narrate the side of a cereal box and I would listen intently.

Couldn't even begin to do this unless I saw a full list of the movies from this year.

Had no interest in seeing Contagion until I remembered that part of it was filmed in Elgin.

I like the part in the Contagion trailer when annoying Gwyneth Paltrow dies! It's so beautiful.

Usually I see a lot more movies but TV has been too good. And since they cram all the good ones into the last part of the year I usually see them at the beginning of the next, so some of these probs came out in 2010. Anyway, here are some favourites:

Bridesmaids- Honestly, this was so hilarious and smart and I need to watch it again.

Bill Cunningham New York- This documentary is one of the best things I've seen in years.

Blue Valentine- I guess this was at the very beginning of last year. Fucking brilliant. If you want to feel better about your own relationships, this is the way to go.

Midnight in Paris - Awesome for so many reasons. Owen Wilson is the best Woody Allen stand in yet.

Another Year - Amazing, uncomfortable, realistic human drama. This shit killed me.

Take Shelter - The acting and character exploration and story are great and it looks pretty and seriously, the acting is so good.

Carnage - As funny as Bridesmaids.

I didn't see enough movies to really hate anything. Which is too bad. I love to rant. And I'm sure I'll see some other good ones in the next little while. Awards season bait. Those are the best.

My favorite teams
  1. Portland Timbers
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
Honestly, there was only 2 flicks I've seen in the theater his year. Sherlock Holmes, which was good--better than the original one. The other was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (technically a 2011 flick but just wasn't released out here until this year...communists!

), which the more I p0onder it, the more I like it.

Other than that everything worth watching I caught on Disc...a good one was "The Lives of Others". Very slow paced but a great look into how things were in East Germany.

Really though, I can't justify between 8 and 10 dollars just to see something the minute it comes out. If i'm going to spend that much money I might as well wait for it on disc.

I've seen the Lives of Others. Good movie. Although, not really recent. I think that one was from 2006.

Pass... I hate what Metallica has become. I still love their music up until recently, but I just dont' get what they are trying to do anymore I guess. Stop trying to be a thing and just fucking get out there and kick the audience in the face with your shredding.

I enjoyed Bridesmaids a lot, my only issue was that I felt like was longer than it should have been. Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, FTW.

The only thing I know about Blue Valentine is that Michelle Williams gets naked in it.

I keep debating on whether I should just buy Midnight in Paris unseen because it looks good... I typically like Woody Allen movies and really wanted to hit the theater for that one because of the premise alone, but it seemed to have pretty limited theater release.

I have a hard time getting what everyone loves about Woddy Allen movies. I try to like them more than I do, and just can't. They aren't bad movies at all, and they all have something about them that are good and original, but as a whole I just feel like all of them get way too much credit for what they are simply because they are woody allen movies.

I like some Woody Allen films, but they are his earlier comedies from the 70s, "Sleeper" stands out in my mind.
