Elling

Loved it. 8 out of 10.

Here's a description from IMDB.

"When his mother, who has sheltered him his entire 40 years, dies, Elling, a sensitive, would-be poet, is sent to live in a state institution. There he meets Kjell Bjarne, a gentle giant and female-obsessed virgin in his 40s. After two years, the men are released and provided with a state-funded apartment and stipend with the hope they will be able to live on their own. Initially, the simple act of going around the corner for groceries is a challenge. Through a friendship born of desperate dependence, the skittish Elling and the boisterous, would-be lover of women, Kjell Bjarne, discover they can not only survive on the outside, they can thrive. But as their courage grows, the two find oddball ways to cope with society, striking up the most peculiar friendships in the most unlikely places."

Not the greatest description, but enough to get the gist.

Saw Hugo on the weekend and it was fucking beautiful. The acting was great (kid actors that can actually act), lots of fun moments, steampunk visuals (there is so much stream and lovely clock parts) Sacha Baron Cohen was great in a comedic role and Ben Kingsley is the man. Even though my stupid eyes can't really see 3D very well I didn't feel like I was missing out on the visuals because they were stunning. It's like an actual good movie that kids can watch, not a lowest common denominator shitty kids movie, very compelling, interesting. It's not surprising Scorcese made this movie, even though it seems out of his wheelhouse. In the end it's about the importance of art and how some parts of life are shit and embracing the parts of life that don't suck shit. And also film preservation, which is a cause close to Marty's heart. And eyebrows I'm sure.

Watched a bunch of movies on Netflix this weekend (I got a Roku, so I now can stream movies in both rooms of my house):

Ink - very cool concept for a story but it felt a lot like "Lo" in the regard that the story was cool but the movie could have used a bigger budget to tell this story better. Script could have used some doctoring as well. Has a twist that most people can probably see coming but does some cool things with rhythm and playing with dimensions and jumps in time.

TiMER - A romantic dramedy wrapped around a scifi premise where folks can get "timers" installed on their wrist that will count down when they are going to meet their soul mate as long as their soul mate has a timer as well. Emma Caulfield (Anya of BTVS) plays the lead and is mostly likable along with the actress playing her sister. Pleasant little story that doesn't dive as deep into the concept of fate and "true" love as I thought it would and the ending feels a little tacked on, as though they didn't know where exactly to go with the story. With that said, still better than most of the crappy chick-flicks that come to the big theaters these days.

I'd give both a 2.5 our of 5. Not horrible, but you may have to be a fan of low-budget indie films to appreciate.

I saw that movie with justin Timberlake and big titties McGee from Big Love about time being currency.

I think your political leanings can impact liking or not liking this movie, although I would advise just taking it for what it is as its pretty good.

basically, people are now genetically engineering to stop aging at 25, the catch is, you have one year left to live. In this movie people earn time not money, when you buy something you pay with time. 5 minutes for a coffee and hour for a bus ride. etc. Society is set up in zones you essentially cant cross without being of a certain social status.

It revolves around the main character (timberlake) who lives in the ghetto, who never has more than a day of time on him at a time, getting a revelation from a rich man who is tired of living (you can essentially be immortal if you are rich) that the system is designed for poor people to run out of time and die, since not everyone can live forever (i.e. for a few to be immortal, many must die). Big titties McGee plays a Rich girl who loathes her origins and joins forces with timberlake.

It turns in to sort of a futuristic if bonnie and clyde were like robin hood.

Caught this one last weekend as well. Visually, a very beautiful movie... I thought the kid's acting was a little stilted and there were times where the characters stayed quiet when there should have been dialogue (not really the actors fault there, though). Kingsley was freaking awesome as usual and it was absolutely great to see Melier get some respect for his contributions to the film world. Pacing was a little slow but it was well worth checking out. Sasha Baron Cohen adding a great level of humor to the movie as well. Brilliant!

Drive: 8/10, thought it was a pretty solid film, well executed, and well acted.

The Interrupters: 8/10, was a very interesting look at gang members in Chicago, and their re-introduction back into society sans gang life.

I Love You Phillip Morris - 7/10

I had no idea what this movie was about or that it even existed. A friend picked it up via Red Box. Great performance by Jim Carrey. I was completely surprised by this movie.

It took me some years but I finally watched The Talented Mr Ripley.

I tend to watch movies long after the year they are released because 1) I dont really care about them when they are released and 2) I like to watch them after the buzz is long gone.

Not sure why I should review this seeing everyone probably saw it years ago.

This film had some good acting although Jude Law had a few bouts of overacting which he often does...Matt Damon is pretty much always awsome. Platrow i have never enjoyed and I dont think she added much to the film via her acting abilities, its too bad she wasnt the first one murdered. Philip Seymore Hoffmans small role was okay and probably the only character I really wanted to know more about..but thats because PS Hoffman rules). It was beautifully filmed and the setting was represented well in a mid century Italian landscape and culture. I also enjoyed the Jazz stylings in the film. But that was lost about and hour into the snooze fest via a plot line that was slow moving and unoriginal. Not sure how many times I have to watch a plot line based on a murder cover up and con and this one took eons to get too which wasnt necessary. The ending to the film is awsome though...not only because it ment that the 3 hour tripe was over but it was actually a good ending.

Although the acting was good I didnt feel any connection or emotional attachement to any character. Thats not always a bad thing as I often find that refreshing but the story line, plot and setting then has to be something more interesting than showing me clips of mid century Italy which I can see via vaulted travell documentaries and picture books.

Bottom line is I dont know what the hype was about when it first came out. It wasnt very interesting just long winded.

Im sure the novel was far more interesting.

Watched the movie "Goon" as it's on ONDEMAND right now before it hits select theaters.

I give it a 5/10. While it had some funny moments, the whole sports movies category in general is all cliche'. Sean William Scott becomes and enforcer and ultimately has to fight Liev Schriver who is the reigning heavy-weight champ/soon to retire goon. The only thing that the movie actually

depicts is the effect enforcers have on the game.

Redbox it when it comes out. Till then save yourself the money.
