Uptown baby!
For anyone who likes doc films about artists and pop culture individuals this is a must see.

Dude catch the **** up! This was the film for this week's episode of Independent Lens on PBS which aired Monday here. I loved it and agreed, Wayne White is interesting as ALL ****. For reals.

Don't gip people and proffer up a damn 2 min. YT soundbite clip---lead people to the whole damn shebang!

P.S. Last week's episode/film was about soul food and I literally was making lovey-dovey googly eyes at the screen. That shit was mouthwatering looking and really brought home again how much I miss my late grandfather's cooking.

I caught some of the end of the soul food film and was upset I missed the rest. How great is independent lens? One of the best programs on television and most important and low and behold its on public broadcasting!!!

Independent Lens is THE SHIT. Always has been. Hands-down one of my favorite PBS series (and I watch a lot of them, heh). I am liking Stanley Tucci as the latest host to boot---I haven't always like all of them damnit! LOL

Did you catch last summer 2012 PBS Summer Arts Festival documentary series? If not, you should hunt it down. Some of the films were terribly interesting. I especially loved "Mariachi High" and the one about the Barnes Collection and how Albert Barnes came to build the collection as well as it's new dedicated museum in Philly. Good, arty stuff! Oh, and the ones about Islamic Art and some Cuban music explats were great too as well as "Tales From A Ghetto Klown" which was about John Leguizamo's last stage show in NYC (well the film follows it from rehearsal and practice run in Chicago to it's NYC opening). Even if all of the films aren't entrancing in subject they are at a minimum informative about something Arts-related that a person can gleam something from.

Sounds like J.J. Abrhams is to direct the next Star Wars movie. At least the slower parts will be interesting while still making little sense to the plot.

Chiming in a month late. BEAUTY IS EMBARRASING is a great film.

Another film I saw recently that blew me away was:

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN (SFSM)

SFSM is a documentary about a Detroit musician, Sixto Rodriguez, that many were calling the Latin Dylan. He was managed by a former Motown executive and released two albums from 1969 & 1971, that, inexplicably, bombed. Nearly 40 years later, a South African obsessed with Rodriguez' music, sets out on a journey to find out whatever happened to him.

The film is a testament to the indomitability of the human spirit, the power of Art - remember: "Art is Nice" - and proves once again, that...

...truth is stranger, much stranger, than fiction.

Finally saw Goon... it was not as bad as I thought it would be until the end... which sucked.

I thought they really blew an opportunity with that movie. It was weird, I went into it expecting the worst, lots of bad hockey thoughts (which there were) but left feeling disappointed. They could've really told the story behind that role in hockey and everything, mostly bad, that goes along with it and the problem with needless violence in general in hockey. There were glimpses of it here and there but instead they pretty much glorified it.

Don't know if it has been mentioned (haven't been in here in a while and I'm too lazy to look back), but "The Man with the Iron Fist" was fucking awful. Seriously... they should take away the RZA's movie making privileges for that bit of garbage. I feel like Tarantino was just being nice by putting his name on it (although if he had been at the helm, I'm sure he could have made a far superior movie based on the content). It takes forever to get where it's going and I just felt like they didn't structure the story in a cohesive enough way for it to shine. I mean, I didn't think it was going to be great - but didn't expect it to be THAT bad. Also, far too much wire-work for the action scenes - to the point that it just seemed too ridiculous.

Makes me really hope "Django" is Tarantino's apology for this movie.

If you're looking for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon then, no, not a great story line, though the cinematography was gorgeous.

...but, I thought it was fine for what is was, basically RZA's homage to Shaw Bros and 70's Kung fu films, whose stroy lines were never their selling point, but Cory Yuen's fight sequences were creative recreations and recombinations of those films, the weapons used were wack, and the violence was over-the-top cartoonish outrageous.

I enjoyed it.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi was decent. Documentary about supposedly the best sushi chef in the world. He's definitely the most committed and obsessed. The movie was more about his obsession and attitude towards work than it was about sushi. Worth a watch, even if you're not a fan of sushi.

My thoughts exactly. We enjoyed it and had fun----it was totally RZA AND Tarantino's uber-fanboy "imitation is the highest form of flattery" tribute to the Shaw Bros. flicks (which BTW, Miramax/Weinstein have done ZERO with in terms of acquiring their rights about a decade ago other than slaughtering them). But then I loves me some Kung Fu action so this was right up my alley. And NO DOUBT the soundtrack was one of the best albums of 2012 IMO!

"Django" is Tarantino's apology for nothing, because that dude does not know how to apologize. He only knows how to inflame.

I am just surprised it took so long to green light an Angry Birds movie. Then again, when it is released in 2016 will anyone really care?
