Kyle's still learning. He could play anywhere, but moving him to tackle would increase the learning curve. He can use his strength more at guard. Maybe next year.

Why pay Bushrod according to any value?

What? Because how else are you going to acquire a FA? It was a way for emery and co. to shore up the entire offensive line in 1 fucking year lol (still impressed by that gj emery) LT/LG (FA) and draft RG/RT while at the same time trying to draft players on defense.

Bushrod had familiarity with kromer as well, so im sure that added to his overall "value" to the team. If the bears didnt offer a competitive contract, he would've gone somewhere else.

Why pay market value for one of the upper tier LT's if tackles aren't that valuable? Shouldn't the Bears have paid "market value" for a lower tier LT but gotten MORE bang for their buck since tackles aren't as valuable in the system? You're basically saying Emery was stupid enough to vastly overpay for a guy that his entire coaching staff was telling him wasn't worth the money b/c of their scheme.

If your pasta recipe will work perfectly fine with generic sauce why would I go and buy you a $4 jar of Ragu when I can go buy a jar for a $1.50 at Aldi and get perfectly good results?

Wasn't this the plan since we drafted him? I can see it happening this year. Mills hasn't looked great. What would you guys think about moving Long to RT and putting DLP/Ola at RG?
no it was not the plan....

a lot of people around here thought that when an interior lineman was good he should get moved outside (and sadly some of our previous coaches too), but with real offensive minded coaches came the ground breaking theory that a QB needs a pocket to step up into which is why we got Slauson and Long in a hurry. don't expect Long to move outside anytime soon....

Ola on the other hand if Mills continue to struggle is a possibility

It wasn't what you'd characterize as a value signing, but he's been a big part of stabilizing the line. He's overpaid, but that was the situation we were in.

I could've swore when we drafted him the plan was to make him a LT eventually. Maybe I'm jumping the gun here, but I don't expect him to be a guard his whole career

Long played LT in college and he was horrible. It wasn't until he started playing LG that people started taking notice of him, and rightfully so. No we will not be moving long to the tackle position.

Emery immediately after drafting Long:

GM Phil Emery said Long's versatility is appealing: "That's part of the reason why we're excited about having him here, is his versatility. He's going to start out at guard. We feel like he can be a starting right tackle. We feel like he can be a good left tackle in this league. So that's part of what attracted us to him."

You were saying?

Link to Emery saying that ? I would be very disappointed in Emery if he did because the tackle and guard positions require very different skill sets.

I didn't know Emery ever said that, still most of those links don't really say much more than they could eventually try him out at tackle. Long isn't a tackle and if you watch him play the position, college games, you will quickly realize why. He was mediocre, and a back up, at best when playing LT and a monster at the Guard position. I don't see them moving him outside.

It was never the plan and in Trestman's offense the guards are a little more important than the tackles.

Some of you just refuse to understand the protection schemes/philosophies of Aaron Kromer. Facepalm.
Yeah, cutler said it last year on his radio show, that they like to build the offensive line from the in out, not from the out in.

I think Long definitely has the physical and mental attributes to move to LT but at this point I just refer back to the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Keep continuity and keep Long where he is unless something drastic happens. Continuity is the key to a great O-line.

Twice when Kromer was with the Saints (2009,2011) his oline won the best offense line award in the league (Madden Most Valuable Protectors Award). There he put most of his efforts in the guards, (Nicks and Evans). I say we let Kromer do his thing and put the best olinemen in the best position to succeed.

before you say too much take a minute to educate yourselves about Kromer, then say they will move Long to OT...

you should all be happy that he won't move to the outside because this is why our overall QB play is looker better since Trest/Kromer arrived. Pressure is not right in the QBs face from DTs...
