Sometimes it just isn't the right fit and no amount of training can break them of bad habits. Hard to watch your hard earned money go down the drain with piss everywhere and furniture being eaten. Especially a crap shoot when you take in shelter dogs.

I had a terrible time with a puppy I got from a shelter. She would not stop peeing on the floor no matter what I did, and then she started hopping the 5 foot fence out back. Gave her to a relative with a taller fence and she never had one accident... blew my mind.

Not doing a bad thing by taking her back, as someone else will most likely foster her if not adopted quickly.

Understand your wifes case, mine would most likely do the same, but you can't let the dog run the house. Doesn't work that way. You'll be miserable in the long run.

Thanks. Her running the house is exactly what it feels like. I'm afraid to leave her alone, and every time I come home I brace myself for what got destroyed. She needs a home with a yard. Even though she gets 4-5 walks per day and 1-2 trips a week to a dog park or tennis court to run free, it's not enough. Too high energy.

How old Tater? Have you tried crate training? Getting a new dog is a huge life change. My wife hated our boxer at first. He was a maniac as a puppy. Took a lot longer to potty train him then we thought. High energy dogs are tough. If you don't property exercise him then they become destructive. I try to get mine 30-60 minutes of activity a day.

She's 2+ years old and has had to litters. The last one was 7 puppies. We walk her 4-5 times a day and play tug-of-war with her too.

If she's that old I don't see her energy level dropping off anytime soon. Crating her will stop the destruction when you aren't home, but will probably have her more pent up when let loose. Walks may need to be turned into un-leashed runs in a closed in area. Know that isn't always possible, especially with family schedules.

Some training does take a long time though, and some dogs need a heavier hand than others (not meaning beating them, but very stern direction). Could even attempt some obedience lessons to see what different training tactics could work from a professional.

Should be old enough to know better. I'm afraid I don't have much experience with shelter dogs. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks though. Sorry to hear it isn't working out, but no reason to make your life miserable.

When I got my pitbull he was just a pup. He tore up every fucking thing I owned. I swear we gave up sofas, chairs, shoes, seat cushions, carpet, table legs, dry wall, everything.

finally he got out of that phase and when we added a pound pit female she came already past the chewing stage. I have been lucky with the house training though, cause that ended very quickly for him and was never an issue for her.

I understand the whole crate training thing could've avoided most of the destruction, but to me that takes away one major plus to owning dogs. They protect your shit when you aren't home.

I talked about it again with my wife tonight and this won't be easy. She started crying and said the dog's like one of the family.

I think you are confusing the terms. Crate TRAINING is just that, a short term training practice. Dog gets older, let them run and they won’t be destructive. And I grew up with Rottweilers and Akitas. Puppies won’t protect shit.

Ok so help me out. Do I crate train a puppy when I already have two adult dogs?

I live in Iowa bruh, most of the time we don't even lock our door.

Also crate training is just a way to potty train as well as keeping your dog safe when you aren't home. Dogs won't soil in their own 'space', which is what the kennel becomes.

Yes. I would. But that depends on the dog and how quickly they adapt to their surroundings.

Sometimes when you have older dogs with a puppy they're entertained/not lonely and will not be as destructive, but it does help in the potty training process for pups. Most won't go in their crate unless they have a bladder issue, and they learn to hold it instead of letting loose whenever they feel the urge.

In Tater's case the dog is older, so the crate training would most likely only help with limiting destruction while not at home.

I sadly have to say I gotta take my boy to get his nuts snipped and tossed this Friday early in the AM. Having a serious moral dilemma here.

The woman wants it done... and of course, the woman wins. I said up front I wouldn't be involved or take him to have it done, but somehow she magically found a way out of it.

I feel like a fucking asshole. I'm gonna be the last known face before he's widdled down to less of a man :crying::nervous:

Update Tater? Crates are not a bad thing. I have one dog who has to go in when I go and one who stays out.

It does suck, but if you aren't breeding it is a good idea for a number of reasons.

Well, she's still here. My wife put an office chair floor mat over one couch and two large boxes on the other and she hasn't been on the couches yet. She hasn't chewed up anything important in a couple of day days either. We'll see...

No fun getting a pet fixed. In DuPage county they have a testicle tax, a 3 year tag for a fixed animal is $40, for "Intact Animals" it's $90. It's like a metaphor for what the government is trying to do to the citizens.

https://www.dupageco.org/AnimalControl/1142/

I think concerned DuPage residents should rise up and stage some sort of 'Wheaton Tea Bag Party", I always wanted a Tricorne hat.
