My advice:
- get a 1080 p. If you don't, you'll regret it later. All new TV's today are 1080p I think. But a 720p will definitely be cheaper - for a good reason.
- don't spend a lot on cables. I think the "name" brands are way overpriced. If you don't think your cables are good enough, get some so-called better ones later. But for now use most of your budget for the TV.
- a HD box is great. It could be my imagination but I think non-HD programming looks better through a HD box too. Sports especially, can look stunning in HD.
- hook your TV up to the best sound devices you have!
One great thing too is the ability to hook your laptop or like me, my desktop up to the TV.
For $500 you should be able to get a name brand (Sony, Panasonic, Sharp etc) 32" 1080p LCD.
or up to a 40" budget TV if you want to go that way. I suggest the name brand.
