I'm still not totally sure why Vancouver didn't keep Torres.

Vancouver lost the cup finals because of many things but one reason that always comes up was their team toughness. They weren't as tough as Boston and Boston was able to bully them around. So what does Vancouver do in the off season? Let their toughest guy go to Phoenix.

You can say a lot about Torres but the guy was effective in the playoffs. He plays right on the edge of the rules and he plays a serviceable game of hockey.

No doubt they were intimidated and resorted to stupidity themselves, but one way to overcome the push with a team as talented as they were is by scoring on the PP. I don't have the numbers, but didn't their PP dry up in that series? I think with a PP and not sinking to Boston's level (which I also thoroughly enjoyed), they win that series.

Torres is effective at being a **** stain. :D

From JJ at HB

WASHINGTON RUMOR:

Late breaking, Hawks have (I’m hearing this morning) discussed a deal for big Cap defenseman John Erskine. There also has been a discussion of a larger deal involving Jeff Halpern (as I predicted on the message board thread this AM) and a number of Hawk prospects. As reported by Al Cimaglia yesterday, a contingent of Cap scouts has been/will be at the UC (and possibly Rockford) to evaluate the goods. And don’t be surprised to see Bryan Bickell dressed tonight.

Heard in passing (nothing more than that) that the Hawks and the Sharks have "kicked the tires" on Ryan Miller.

That's interesting. Can't see them moving him, though, even though that organization needs to mix things up.

Good point about thepp and yeah vans pp was HORRIBLE in the finals while Boston thrived on it despite being dreadful with the advantage in all the previous rounds.

Just another story that made that finals matchup so enjoyable.

I could see them shipping Miller out. Nothing they do would surprise me...they're a disaster and Miller was pretty vocal about it this week.

do you really want a 6.25 goalie? the position is not at a premium anymore, we can get by with what we have and use the money on D and a offense. no need for miller. the idea is silly, and it just wont happen.

STAGNANT SABRES DENY TRADES ARE IMMINENT
The floundering Buffalo Sabres (winners of only nine games since their fateful clash with the Boston Bruins Nov. 12) continue to figure prominently in trade rumors

Despite GM Darcy Regier's claim last week a major roster shakeup wasn't in the works, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported Regier was looking to make changes to his top two lines.

The Sabres GM is apparently shopping center Derek Roy and right wingers Drew Stafford and Brad Boyes in hopes of landing top-six forwards in return.

Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller, meanwhile, denied an Internet-generated rumor claiming he requested a trade. He texted TSN on Wednesday to say he's never requested a trade and never would, pleading for no one ask him that question again.

Roy, Stafford and Boyes would have value as the trade deadline nears, but it's unlikely rival teams would be willing to part with comparable players to get them, preferring instead to offer up draft picks and/or prospects. That's the usual going rate for players from teams considered as trade deadline “sellers.”

Regier, coach Lindy Ruff and owner Terry Pegula continue to downplay trade talk, but if the Sabres keep sinking in the standings, it could force them into salary-dumping deals and, perhaps, an off-season overhaul.

COULD THE OILERS TRADE RYAN SMYTH AGAIN?
Speculation continues to grow the Edmonton Oilers will once again shop veteran left winger Ryan Smyth near the trade deadline.

Dan Tencer of 630 CHED recently interviewed NBC Sports hockey analyst Pierre McGuire, who claimed an Eastern Conference playoff team had “significant interest” in Smyth.

Tencer took to Twitter to suggest Oilers GM Steve Tambellini could trade Smyth if there were teams willing to make a strong pitch and then re-sign him as an unrestricted free agent this summer.

But Smyth has a no-movement clause and would like to finish his career as an Oiler. Before he agrees to a move, Smyth may want assurances he could rejoin the team in July.

Rumor Round Up: New York Islanders

By the midway point of this season, the New York Islanders were considered trade deadline “sellers.”

Their position in the standings - last in the Atlantic Division and near the bottom of the Eastern Conference - adds to the perception they'll be targeted by playoff contenders seeking to bolster their lineups by Feb. 27.

The Islanders are one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league sitting 27th with 2.32 goals per game. They're marginally better defensively, giving up the ninth-most goals-against per game (2.92).

Only on special teams are they among the best, with the sixth-ranked power play and eighth-ranked penalty kill.

Their first-half struggles sparked trade rumors that mostly focused on goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, who is eligible for unrestricted free agency this summer.

Injuries to fellow Isles goalies Rick DiPietro and Al Montoya, however, ensure Nabokov will remain on Long Island for at least a few more weeks.

Despite a 10-12-0 record, Nabokov has a goals-against average of 2.38 and a save percentage of .919, numbers that will surely attract attention from playoff contenders looking for an upgrade or insurance in goal.

Nabokov won't be the only pending Islanders UFA who will become a trade target.

Right winger P-A Parenteau is the Islanders’ third-leading scorer with 42 points in 47 games. He's on pace for a career-high 74 points, which would also put him in line for a significant raise over the $1.25 million he’s earning this season.

If GM Garth Snow believes there’s a risk of losing Parenteau to free agency, he’ll put him on the trade block where he'll attract considerable interest from contenders seeking a skilled playmaker.

Another trade candidate is center Frans Nielsen, currently sixth in team scoring with 22 points in 47 games and earning only $525,000 this season.

However, it shouldn't be assumed these two will bolt for free agency. Last year, Snow was able to convince Matt Moulson to re-sign long-term rather than test the open market, so he might have similar success with Parenteau and Nielsen.

Veteran defenseman Steve Staios is another pending UFA and a more viable trade candidate. He's been a healthy scratch in recent games and would attract attention from teams in the market for blueline depth.

Right winger Kyle Okposo also popped up in early-season trade rumors. He had only seven points in his first 20 games, but since Dec. 23 has been on an offensive tear, with points in 11 of his past 15 games. Any chatter suggesting he’s available has died down.

While a quick look at the standings suggests the Islanders will be “sellers,” that's not a certainty.

Of late there's been a scarcity of trade speculation involving the Islanders. Monday's 3-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs aside, they've been on a bit of a roll, winning eight of their past 13 games and beating Detroit, Washington and Philadelphia over that stretch.

Budding superstar center John Tavares had points in all but one of those games and Nabokov has been sharp, finishing as a game star in four of his past five starts.

With Snow’s club playing its best hockey of the season, he’ll likely be unwilling to make any significant changes at this time.

If the Isles flat line in the coming weeks, though, Snow will go into sell mode. If they can find a way to gain significant ground in the standings, he'll either stand pat at the trade deadline or become a buyer.

Rumor Roundup: Subban on the move?
As Montreal Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier continues the western leg of his recent scouting trip, rumors are flying back in Montreal over which players on the current Habs roster might soon be on the move.

Robert Laflamme of the Canadian Press reported defenseman P.K. Subban has been mentioned as a possible trade candidate.

The 22-year-old rearguard has struggled in his sophomore season and his undisciplined play has drawn criticism from observers like former Habs coach Jacques Martin, who suggested the young blueliner didn't have a good understanding of the game.

Laflamme, however, expressed doubt the Canadiens would move Subban.

Several scouts he spoke to reached the same conclusion, pointing out the absence of skilled veterans like Andrei Markov on the Canadiens defense has thrust Subban into a role of increased responsibility, one he's not fully comfortable with at this stage of his career.

Subban possesses impressive speed and skills, and with maturity he should blossom into an elite defenseman. That's not the kind of player the Canadiens should move, unless they're certain of getting equal or greater value in return.

Dealing away Subban only to watch him thrive elsewhere would conjure up memories of the Habs doing the same thing with John LeClair in the mid-1990s. That was a move they came to regret and they should avoid making the same mistake with Subban.

BLUESHIRTS LOOKING FOR BLUELINERS?
New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh was fortunate to escape serious injury during last weekend's game against the Boston Bruins after being on the receiving end of a blindside hit from Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference early in overtime.

McDonagh suffered no lingering effects from the hit, while Ference was assessed a game misconduct, as well as a subsequent three-game suspension from league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan. The Rangers went on to win the game 3-2.

The incident, however, spurred New York Post columnist Larry Brooks to call upon Rangers management to find an additional defenseman who coach John Tortorella would trust to log big minutes.

Brooks recommended Carolina's Tim Gleason, Dallas' Sheldon Souray and Nashville's Ryan Suter as potential trade targets, but it remains to be seen if GM Glen Sather shares the reporter's concern over the Rangers’ blueline depth.

Prior to McDonagh's near-brush with injury, it was assumed if Sather went shopping near the deadline, it would be for another top-six forward. He could try to land a scoring winger and a second-pair blueliner, but that could prove a tall order.

If Sather were inclined to look for another defenseman, perhaps he should contact the Minnesota Wild.

Marek Zidlicky, a former draft pick of the Rangers, was a healthy scratch in the Wild's 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday.

It was the first time he'd been scratched since joining the Wild and Michael Russo of Startribune.com believes management won’t have difficulty convincing Zidlicky to waive his no-trade clause if other clubs show interest in him by the deadline.

The Wild could find it difficult to market the 34-year-old Zidlicky, as there's been a noticeable decline in his performance this season, plus he has another year (at $4 million) remaining on his contract.

BISHOP ODD MAN OUT?
Goaltender Brian Elliott's new contract extension with the St. Louis Blues means there won't be an opportunity for No. 3 goalie Ben Bishop, currently toiling with their farm team, to move up to the big club in the near future.

Unless Bishop plays in 15 more NHL games this season, he'll become eligible for Group 6 unrestricted free agent status this summer. Unless Elliott or Jaroslav Halak is sidelined by injury, Bishop won't get in the required number of games for the Blues to retain his rights as a restricted free agent.

That could prompt Blues management to shop him, rather than risk losing him for nothing.

He's considered by some scouts to be “the best goaltender not in the NHL,” which could draw the interest of teams like Tampa Bay and Columbus, who desperately need goaltending depth.

They were talking about Subban on hockey central at noon yesterday. They obviously agreed that it would be an absolutely horrible idea to trade him. Damien Cox said Subban is as untouchable as Mike Richards and Jeff Carter were at this time last year.

For fun... Leddy + what would land Subban?

Subban? Pass. I'd win or lose without him and not even bat an eyelash.

Jeff Carter is 100% available

If Blue Jackets trade Jeff Carter, shouldn

After this year, he's got 10 years remaining on a contract that pays him $5.27 [million] in terms of cap hit every single year. Columbus would like to trade Jeff Carter. They'd also like to get a similar package in return to what they gave Philadelphia, and that's a high draft pick and a good young roster player.

There's a 2 center.

There's also a shitty long contract.
