Rumor Roundup: Did Liles deal seal Schenn's fate?
The NHL all-star break is now upon us and while there's no official moratorium on trades, it's unlikely we'll see trade activity involving roster players during this period.

That means the Toronto Maple Leafs trade watch will grind on, with Leafs fans and pundits eagerly waiting for GM Brian Burke to pull off another significant deal weeks ahead of the trade deadline.

In the wake of the Leafs re-signing veteran blueliner John-Michael Liles to a four-year extension on Wednesday, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reported defenseman Luke Schenn could be considered “a prime trade candidate.”

Schenn's name has popped up in the rumor mill before, most recently linked to Philadelphia left winger James van Riemsdyk. If Burke is in pursuit of a top scoring forward, it will take a player like Schenn as the centerpiece in a package deal to get it done.
In recent days there's also been speculation center Mikhail Grabovski has become a trade candidate because of his unrestricted free agent status this summer.

Burke was quick to shoot that down, telling the Toronto Star he wasn't even close to a deal involving Grabovski, adding his free agent eligibility in no way affected his status with the team.

THOMAS TOAST IN BOSTON?
Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas raised eyebrows earlier this week with his refusal for political reasons to attend the White House ceremony honoring the team's Stanley Cup championship.

It's also led to media speculation suggesting Bruins management, unhappy over Thomas' stance, could shop him this summer when his “no-movement” clause expires, clearing the way for backup Tuukka Rask to take over as the starting goalie next season.

That is far-fetched, but if it were to happen, it would be a huge overreaction by the Bruins.

What Thomas did overshadowed the White House ceremony, embarrassed Bruins management and earned the veteran goalie a considerable amount of criticism around the league.

That being said, it's not justification for trading away a guy who's won the Vezina Trophy two of the past three seasons, will probably be a finalist for it again this year, won the Conn Smythe for carrying the Bruins to their first Stanley Cup in 39 years, and is their best bet in goal if they hope to repeat as champions.

NO TAKERS FOR CARTER
Columbus Blue Jackets center Jeff Carter remains a fixture in the rumor mill, this time courtesy of TSN's Darren Dreger, who recently reported Carter was “100 percent available,” but added his hefty contract could prove difficult to move.

Dreger claimed the Blue Jackets were seeking the same return (a good young roster player and a first round draft pick) they gave up to the Philadelphia Flyers to land Carter, but doubted the Jackets would find many takers.

He also dismissed a rumor linking Carter to the Maple Leafs, saying they had no interest in taking on that contract.

SUBBAN RUMORS SHOT DOWN
There's a growing backlash in the Montreal media against the notion of the Canadiens shopping charismatic (or cocky, depending upon your view) defenseman P.K. Subban.

Mathias Brunet of La Presse, Luc Gelinas of RDS.ca, and Mike Boone of The Montreal Gazette rejected the idea, suggesting it would be madness on the part of the Canadiens to move a promising young talent like Subban.

ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reported none of the teams he'd spoken with heard Subban mentioned as available.

Sportsnet's Louis Jean was more blunt, calling the Subban trade rumors “ludicrous.”

Bet it is Nick Cafardo reporting it. :shifty:

Once all-star weekend is over there will be less than a month remaining until the NHL's Feb. 27 trade deadline. As a result, the list of potential trade candidates is growing. Here's a look at the most notable names to appear in the rumor mill of late.

Ryan Suter, Nashville Predators
Suter made headlines on Friday when he said he won't re-sign with the Predators by the trade deadline and preferred to postpone contract talks until season's end. Given the Predators are jockeying for playoff positioning in the Western Conference, it's unlikely they'll trade Suter, but expect his name to remain a fixture in the rumor mill.

Zach Parise, New Jersey Devils
Trade speculation has been dogging Parise since he and the Devils agreed to a one-year contract extension last summer, making him eligible for UFA status this summer. Concerns over the mounting debt of team ownership has cast doubt on the ability of Devils management to re-sign Parise and fuelled talk they’ll ship him out at the trade deadline. It's hard to believe GM Lou Lamoriello would move his best player with the Devils battling for a playoff berth, but that's not going to silence the rumor mongers leading up to Feb. 27.

Jeff Carter, Columbus Blue Jackets
TSN's Darren Dreger claimed the 27-year-old center was “100 percent available,” but noted his hefty contract, which has nine years remaining at a annual cap hit of $5.3 million (including a full no-trade clause), would be difficult to move. If Carter is shopped the best bet is in the off-season and, even then, he’ll prove a tough sell.

Brenden Morrow, Dallas Stars
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported some teams were wondering if Morrow would be available if the Stars fall out of playoff contention by the deadline. The 33-year-old left winger still has another season remaining on his contract, with a full no-trade clause, so the Stars aren't under any pressure to move him. Morrow would certainly attract considerable attention from playoff contenders if the Stars decide to shop him, but it remains to be seen if they'll consider that option.

Andrei Kostitsyn, Montreal Canadiens
Kostitsyn, who turns 27 Feb. 3, is eligible for UFA status this summer. He recently said he'd be willing to re-sign with the Habs for less than market value, but the left winger may no longer fit into their future plans. Kostitsyn is on pace for his fourth 20-plus goal season, but the Canadiens expected much more from him.
Mason Raymond, Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Province suggested Raymond's lack of offensive production could result in him being shopped, either for more blueline depth or a physical checking forward.

Ryane Clowe, San Jose Sharks
The parade of left wingers rumored to be available continues with Clowe, as he's been linked to the Maple Leafs. Clowe is currently sidelined with a facial injury, but is expected to return before the trade deadline. The Leafs supposedly covet Clowe's grit and leadership, but those are also the features that make him valuable to the Sharks, meaning GM Doug Wilson would want a significant return to part with him.

Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu, Carolina Hurricanes
These two have been a permanent fixture in the rumor mill since early December. They're both eligible for UFA status this summer and aren't expected to be re-signed by the Hurricanes. The reason both haven't been dealt yet is because Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford hopes to increase their trade value as the deadline approaches. Gleason has been linked to the Flyers, Blackhawks and Bruins, Ruutu with the Red Wings and Maple Leafs.

Ales Hemsky and Sam Gagner, Edmonton Oilers
Of all the players rumored to be available leading up to this year's trade deadline, the 28-year-old Hemsky is considered “most likely to be traded.” He's been linked to the Blackhawks, Red Wings, Kings, Maple Leafs and Predators, but concern over his injury history and declining production may dampen his value.

Darren Dreger claimed Oilers GM Steve Tambellini wasn't shopping the 22-year-old Gagner, but every time Tambellini talks to a rival GM about a defenseman, Gagner's name comes up. The Oilers desperately need quality blueline depth and it could take Gagner to land a good defenseman, especially since there's not many options available for the Oilers in this summer's free agent market.

Marek Zidlicky, Minnesota Wild
The Wild's free-fall in the standings over the past six weeks had GM Chuck Fletcher seeking offensive help, leading to speculation Zidlicky will be available. He's a five-time 40-plus point defenseman, but over the past two seasons his production has been in decline. Turning 35 on Feb. 3 and with one year (at $4 million) remaining on his contract, Zidlicky’s trade value isn't as good as it once was.

Or maybe Oduya depending on which way Winnipeg trends.

The Flames are a real tough one to judge at this point.

The top 7 in the West appear to be locks but of the group that could battle for 8th, I like Calgary and Dallas most.

Calgary has a real tough stretch coming up...

Detroit
Chicago
Anaheim
San Jose
Phoenix
Vancouver

That run alone could end up determining what they're going to do.

Rumor Focus: Ryan Suter

Comments by Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Suter last Friday regarding his contract negotiations left pundits talking about how GM David Poile has to decide whether to trade Suter before the Feb. 27 deadline or risk losing him for nothing in the summer as a free agent.

Suter told the media he “didn't see any benefit” in rushing to sign a new contract by the trade deadline, adding he didn't want to be a distraction and instead wanted to focus on helping the Predators make the playoffs.

His comments heightened speculation he’ll test the UFA market, which he subsequently denied, reiterating he didn't want contract negotiations to become a distraction over the remainder of the season, a point he also repeated to Poile to ensure there would be no misunderstanding.

Suter, 27, added he hoped he wouldn't be traded and said he believed the Predators “have a chance to win, we have a pretty good team.”

Given the Predators’ current position in the Western Conference standings (tied for fifth with Chicago, one point behind fourth-place St. Louis), the odds of Suter being traded are slim.

While Poile faces the possibility of losing Suter for nothing in this summer's free agent market, whether or not it actually plays out that way is still very much up in the air.

Poile has $32.7 million invested in 13 players for next season. Assuming the salary floor remains at the current level of $48.3 million, he'd have to spend around $16 million just to become cap compliant.

That would leave more than enough to re-sign Suter, as well as team captain Shea Weber, who's a restricted free agent with no right to arbitration this summer.

In recent years, the Predators haven't spent toward the cap ceiling. Poile, however, has informed Suter and Weber team ownership has agreed to increase spending for next season.

How much of an increase it will be will depend on the next collective bargaining agreement and if there's any sort of reduction in the cap ceiling.

Still, for a team that has operated on a tight budget for several years, the fact ownership is now willing to spend to retain their stars bodes well for keeping Suter in the fold.

If the Predators weren't in the thick of the Western Conference playoff chase, Poile might be more inclined to trade Suter by the deadline. If that were the case, the team would be in more of a rebuild mode. But Nashville, winners of 10 of its past 12 games, isn’t a team in need of such a radical move.

It's been suggested Poile could move Suter to bolster his offense, but while the Predators do lack an elite scoring forward, they're not hurting offensively and sit 12th in goals-for per game, with the league's second-best power play. Nine Preds have scored 10 or more goals.

That's not to suggest Poile won’t look to add offensive depth by the trade deadline, just that he’s unlikely to dangle Suter or Weber as trade bait to accomplish it.

If anything, it wouldn't be surprising to see Poile become a buyer in the coming weeks. That mindset from the GM would go a long way towards convincing the two blueliners to remain with the Predators, as it would serve as proof the front office is serious about contending for the Stanley Cup.

Regardless of Suter's free agent status, given the Predators’ performance this season and their Cup aspirations, it makes no sense to ship him out at the trade deadline.

Read the Hawks don't wanna take on any contracts beyond this yr because of the labor stuff.

Ruuty & Allen are both UFA's after the season.
