Re: Niemi... the story continues!

Just posting facts, sorry if you don't like it. In case you didn't know this thread was originally started by IHF on the old boards and is about Niemi... so why wouldn't we discuss Niemi?

Don't like it, don't click it... it's that simple.

Yea you have to outscore your opponent to win, and BECAUSE OF NIEMI the Hawks only have to score 2 goals a game this series to win as he stops 40 shots per game. And it's not like I am discrediting Toews or anyone on the Hawks because THE TEAM has played great and THE TEAM is 11-4 in the playoffs. Just posting statistics and speculating, kind of the reason we have discussion boards like this in the first place... no need to get personal. Attack the post not the poster.

And Ron Hextall scored goals.

Brother....for christ's sake give me a little credit, I know where this thread started and why it started and who started it. Kind of hard to not know who started it there or here is it??? Blatant fanboy is blatant fanboy.

You're posting facts from ONE series....go with the entire playoffs if you're going to make broad comparisons is all I am saying.

If I am not mistaken, and on this one I more than likely am....Brodeur, Roy and Richter(????) scored them too.

Brodeur has scored twice, Hextal scored once, Roy and Richter never did.

Shall I?

Niemi: 11-4

Halak: 9-7

Niemi: 2 Shutouts

Halak: 0 Shutouts

Niemi: 414/449 Saves (.922 SV%)

Halak: 475/513 Saves (.926 SV%)

Niemi: 35 Goals Against In 892:47 (2.35 GAA)

Halak: 38 Goals Against In 894:51 (2.55 GAA)

--------------------------------------------------

AGAINST THE 1 SEED:

NIEMI:

3-0

113/118 Saves (.958 SV%)

5 Goals Against In 192:17 (1.56 GAA)

HALAK:

4-3

217/231 Saves (.939 SV%)

14 Goals Against In 342:05 (2.46 GAA)

--------------------------------------------

Both goalies have had/are having a bad playoff series...

Niemi Against Vancouver In The Western Conference Semi-Finals (3rd Seed):

4-2

150/167 Saves (.898 SV%)

17 Goals Against In 338:14 (3.02 GAA)

Halak Against Philadelphia In The Eastern Conference Finals (7th Seed):

1-2

55/63 Saves (.873 SV%)

8 Goals Against In 149:53 (3.20 GAA)

-----------------------------------------------------

Anything else?

And to your "shutting down Pittsburgh" part... he played well against Pittsburgh but nothing on the level of how he stoned Ovechkin and the Caps. I have watched all 81 playoff games for real and have seen every one of his games and every one of Niemi's games these playoffs.

The big story for the Pittsburgh series was Gorges/Gill shutting down Crosby who only mustered 1 PPG in the series I believe and Cammalleri going bananas and scoring 7 times.

Niemi has played ALL AROUND better than Halak.

EDIT @RDR:

I think Hextall scored twice, one was in the Playoffs and one in the Reg. Season.

LOL....wow, thank you for FULLY quantifying the facts. Talk about taking someone literally! So looking at these, they have played pretty evenlly as far as the position goes, stats wise, until this round. The point I was trying to make was Halak took out the BEST team in the league statistically, then turned around and beat the #2 seed in the east. Where as Niemi opened up against the 7 seed then played a high seed. I have eaten my crow when it comes to the Finn and will admit

And as far as the real story in the Pens vs Habs series, who cares what it was,....the proper outcome was all that mattered. As my son, who is a full blown Caps fan.....saves the peace between Mommy (wings fan) & daddy (Hawks fan).....says: PENGUINS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

The hawks have put up 4 or more goals in 8 of their 12 wins.

Nashville first lost they scored 1 he gave up 4.

Second loss they got 1 he gave up 4

Vancouver loss they got 1 he gave up 5

Van loss 2 hawks got 1 he gave up 4

This team scores they win.

Buff with 8, Toews with 7, Kane and Sharp with 7. They are destroying the other teams offensively.

Niemi has made 430 total saves. 26.875 a game. He has only had 3 games this playoffs where he has made more than 31 saves. And he has only made more the 26.876 saves in 6 of the 16 games. Niemi has played well and is making all sorts of big games. But with the way this team has been playing, and against the teams they play, I would be disappointed if he wasn't putting up the gaudy numbers he is.

Not sure about Richter, but you can add Osgood to the list.

With all due respect, Halak is golfing.

What are Boucher's and Leighton's numbers?

I'll look them up in a bit... the whole Halak discussion came up when I said that overall Niemi was better than Halak and bubble "kindly" disagreed, lol. Leighton's are inflated thanks to playing the Habs and getting 3 shutouts one of them was like 16 saves?

Of his 3 shutouts, they average 25 shots per game so that's not too shabby. Niemi's 2 shutouts averaged 28 shots per game which is pretty close.

We'll see how he plays against a real offense.

Leighton's are inflated because he played 5 games and did very well in them, which is why I asked for his AND Boucher's numbers.

I don't need stats to see that Niemi has been the best goalie in the playoffs so far.

Exactly.

In the one game the Habs blew out Philly, the Habs had 38 shots on Leighton. In one of his shutouts they only had 17 shots on goal.....that's pretty pathetic.

He had a good series but facing the Hawks will be light years different than facing the Habs. I think he'll be looking at a lot more shots like he did when Philly got smoked and he'll have problems.

During the season Niemi had 7 shutouts

SA:

21

28

17

33

18

30

23

Should we not count some of those in his numbers for the season?

I honestly never got excited over any of those except the Detroit and Nashville if those were the correct ones. And either way he's playing much better than he ever did in the regular season.

I apologized damn you!!! the difference in this series is going to be Leighton will play against an offense that can deal out hits as well as take them...Montreal's offense could not deal with Phillys physical brand of play. He really is in for a rude awakening when any of the Hawks forwards plow through a philly hit ('cept Kaner of course, poor little guy...he'll pass it before he gets floored though), keeps on coming and gets a quality shot off on him.
