YOU HEAR THAT JIM! Them's fighting words... haha[/quote]

Again, it's really a matter of opinion at this point. Huet was incredible against Detwat in game five last year, despite the loss. But by the time Niemi had won the net, he was broken. Based on what I saw last year, I don't envision any scenario where Huet would have been able to win four series for the Hawks.

As for being an idiot? At least someone is paying attention.

You are not Nostradamus. You are guessing here. Game four last year Huet was horrible BUT he had not played a game in over a month. Game five in Detroit the only reason the Hawks were even in OT was Huet, like you said.

Who know's how it would have transpired this year. Niemi's SV % in the finals was .880 or something brutal, but he most definitely won games against Nashville and San Jose.

No one will ever know, and to tell you the truth, I kind of agree with you, but still part of me says the Hawks were destined to win the Cup no matter the goalie.

And the only reason Niemi was even with the Hawks last year verses Crawford, was Cap Space.

And to add: Crawford coming into Game 4 and only letting in one goal down two men was pretty awesome on his part. I personally think Q should have let him finish the game.

I don't think Crawford is as bad as many make him out to be. I think he should be a servicable, if not good backup.

I agree on Crawford and he'll finally get his shot this year. Kudos to him for sticking it out in the AHL this long. Many other teams would have had to give him a legit shot already. One he has yet to get from the Hawks.

and I really wasn't trying to slam PJ either. Huet had almost everything going against him, which no doubt got in his head. Over paid. Not really needed at the time of the contract. Fan base hated him, and he had the tendency for the super soft goal. Most importantly the TEAM was clearly not confident many nights he was in there.

I thought Crawford's hit was $800K last year and Niemi's was $826K. If so, the brass must have seen more potential in Niemi. I was pushing for him over Crawford last year. Detroit really wanted him, so I figured that they must have known something.

Cory was over a mil and Niemi had to clear waivers. I could be wrong though but I don't think so.

He was over a million last year? His cap hit this year is only $800K.

True. Some of the goals Niemi let in in the finals would have had the fans looking for the Cross and Nails if Huet let them in.

new contract? Didn't he only sign a one year contract last year?

I'm also almost positive that if they sent Niemi down he'd have had to clear waivers on the way back up and they were not willing to lose him.

But you said it was because of cap space that they kept Niemi over Crawford. Not waivers originally. I just thought that Niemi had a higher hit than Crawford, but I can't find info. I doubt he would have taken a pay cut from last year if he had to sign a new contract this year. But maybe he did.

EDIT: Found what I was looking for. Crawford signed a 2 year contract on July 6, 2009. With his cap hit this year of $800K, so I assume it was for $800K each year. Which means his cap hit was less than Niemi's last year since his hit was $826K.

Could have been waivers. Either way there was a reason Niemi stayed verses Crawford and it was not the play on ice during camp. I get it wrong once in while too.

Then it sounds like we should have just made Crawford the #1 this year and passed on Turco. Should this be in purple?

Panthers' crease scenarios

6:50AM ET

Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers may pretty much be done moving -- unless they sign Antti Niemi.

Apparently, GM Dale Tallon is interested in bringing the Stanley Cup-winning goalie to Florida, but he has to think long and hard about this. For one, they won't be able to move Tomas Vokoun because his big contract makes him untradeable. Secondly, the Panthers have a handful of goalies already in the organization, and bringing in the 26-year-old Niemi would force the Panthers to re-think their crease plans.

NHL.com's Dan Rosen writes that, while acquiring Niemi is possible, the Panthers would likely have to "make a move or two" in order for this to happen. The Panthers have plenty of cap space to make this work but, before they do this, they may try to trade backup goalie Scott Clemmensen, since he's on a one-way deal and they may lose him for nothing if they waive him to the minors.

Although it's unlikely the Panthers sign Niemi to a long-term deal, doing so drastically changes their plan for prospect Jacob Markstrom. The 20-year-old prospect, recently signed out of Sweden, will likely spend the year in the minors, but he could very well come up to the NHL next season. And if Niemi is retained beyond that, Markstrom will either be brought along slowly for the starter job, or perhaps shopped around for a trade, if the market yields a good enough return.

Nothing new.

Well played!

Wouldn't they have to move Vocoun then? Wouldn't surprise me if Tallon went after the player he personally scouted. Just like Dudley and Aliu.

From what I have read, that Markstrom kid is suppossed to be a hell of a goalie. And only 20 years old. This doesn't make much sense in my mind.

Since this is his basic goodbye thread:

Don't know if I will ever feel as comfortable in a 1 v 1 situation whether it be a breakaway or a shootout!

Interesting you bring that up Stu.

Niemi was 6-2 in 8 Shoot Out attempts. Very small sample on a team with 4-5 premier SO forwards. But always very confident.

Goalies with over 45

Brodour 52 34-18

Lundqvuist 51 30-21

Turco 50 28-22

Miller 48 29-19

Luongo 42 (just to throw him under the bus) 20-22

In case anyone wants to check out the stats..

Lol, I love how vague these rumors are from Eck. Niemi could make his decision soon! Yea no shit, he doesnt have much time until training camp starts, so of course he will make a decision soon.
