Of all the Beatles facts, this one still astounds me...

I never said Lifeson (and Geddy and Peart) aren't supremely talented musicians. Their music just makes my soul (and tubesteak) shrivel. I had to learn a couple Rush songs in my first cover band, so I appreciate his expertise, but on all other levels, he's just a Canadian.

Fair enough and for what its worth I never did think Alex Lifeson was anything extraordinary when it comes to guitar. His timing is impeccable though but most of that comes from Neal Pert. Who BTW is a very interesting individual and very introverted.

I guess my point is what the pull off live with only three people when 99% of bands have fill ins is pretty awesome. I'll shut up now

I have checked in on this thread periodically but haven't posted in it, as I can't even comprehend many of the things being said. The main classic rock station in the New York area is 104.3, and every Sunday morning for a few hours they have what's called Breakfast with the Beatles, where they play exclusively Beatles music and info on them. I can't tell you how many Sunday mornings over the years I was going to the store to get something, and just ended up driving around listening to the Beatles for an hour or longer. And it isn't about the production of the albums, of course that helps. They have over a hundred songs that I love. The music is great, the words are great, the harmony is great. I consider George Harrison as the most underrated musician/singer of all time.

This stuff is just awesome, and I really feel sorry for those that can not appreciate it.

Finally a thoughtful post in this thread:

-People that didnt grow up during that period dont understand the Beatles influence not only on music but culture. When the Beatles played those 2 songs on Ed Sullivan the whole country listened. When they release Sgt Peppers a bunch of famous musicians rent rooms at a Hotel in Hollywood and listened to the album non-stop for 3 days trying to figure out what the Beatles were up to. Even Jimi Hendricks was performing the entire Sgt Peppers album live 3 days after it was released

-That said, George Harrison is incredibly underrated as a guitarist and songwriter. His problem was that he was younger than the others and developed later than them. So, much of his catalog was written at the end of the Beatles and showed up on his solo album. If anyone wants to she George at his best then youtube "concert for George" where some of the greatest musicians in the world do a tribute concert to him

I like Citizen Kane. I also like The Beatles, but I think they're overrated. Except for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "A Day In The Life." Those songs are fucking awesome.

The point isn't whether a person likes the shit or not. Nobody has to like them. But saying the beatles suck is just Special person.

I think some of what Ole is talking about is just how some music doesn't resonate with some people. There is no band or song that will be universally liked by everyone. But it should still be possible to appreciate a band or music that you don't like. Rush is a great example. I listen to that shit and I'm like holy **** this is amazing and I can't stand it.

Its stupid when people are so dismissive of some of the biggest bands in history. Doesn't matter if you are talking about bob dylan, the beatles, rolling stones, jimi hendrix, or whatever. There's always some idiot that is like they suck and they're overrated. But you can be damn sure that dude listens to plenty of musicians who list the people dude shit all over as major influences.

I think Peart is arguably the best drummer in rock music, but I think on a personal level he's a potential weirdo. One of the most off-putting things about Rush to me is the insane Randian stuff, most of which comes from Peart, I believe.

Anyone who has ever sat down and studied the chord progressions, melodies and harmonies from the Beatles knows that those guys (especially McCartney) were brilliant. When you throw in their impact, musicianship, etc., it becomes obvious that we'll never see anything like that again.

And anyone who says that they sucked is just being a contrarian. It's not their honest opinion.

Back in 1971 a band called Mott the Hopple had minor popularity. One of their songs made fun of the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Wonder where Mott the Hoople is now?

Ommy, the same principals apply to music that is being created today.

I actually like their version of "All the Young Dudes." But other than that, not too familiar with them and never heard of that song you referenced. Making fun of the Beatles and Stones? LOL, bad choice.

All the Young Dudes has the Beatles reference in it. I think they wrote that cheezy song: "Cleveland Rocks" and a decent song called "all the way to Memphis" but lots of other shit songs. They were popular for about 18 months

John Paul Jones would beg to differ. It's weird how those two are so similar in taking a back seat yet being instrumental (pun intended) to the collective of their respective bands.

This woman might be the most underrated guitarist in the world. Last year I posted about the Wrecking Crew which was a team of studio artist that played the music on hundreds of hit records in the 60s'. Everything from Sinatra to the Beach Boys, they once played on nine #1 singles in one year. They were also the band that Phil Spector used to create his Wall of Sound. Her name is Carol Kaye and she has been called the greatest bass player ever
