What do you have money for?

I mean I'd buy a $200 set at Walley World and call it kosher.

I think you have quite a bit of disposable income, so you could go to golf galaxy and get fitted etc.

im getting fitted. is 2gs expensive?

2k is pretty expensive for what should be "game improvement" clubs and a fitting. PGA Superstore does it for free. Clubs themselves should be around 1k on their own.

I'm a single digit handicap and my irons cost $799 (bought this year), driver $300 (bought this year), 3 wood and rescue another $300+, and putter $400. With that being said, anyone just starting the game has no reason to pay that much for a driver, woods, and putter and can get them for probably $300 total. Irons are irons and they will cost a bit no matter what, but plenty of quality putters, woods, etc that can be bought on the cheap and get the job done.

My girlfriend recently wanted to get into the game, and her entire set basically cost $700 - and that was only because we chose to go that way and get her a decent one to get started with.

I'd say so, but like I said if you have the money, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

HW is spot on with not needing to spend that much on clubs. The more expensive clubs will do nothing for you if you are just starting out. Go and get a decent set, but nothing ridiculous. The key to enjoying golf is realizing that even the best players in the world have bad days. Oh, and beer.

yea. I just want something forgiving. I figured the more expensive the more forgiving. I have zero clue about golf so this will get interesting. whats a bad ass driver?

Judging by how long I played and how pitiful I was, I guess I made a good choice in going cheap. I played maybe two years and decided there were far more easier and cheaper things to do to get myself frustrated than hitting a little white ball, then chasing it for hours on end. I dumped my clubs at my Dad's garage sale and never looked back. Bottom line, if I could be allowed to toss the ball up in the air and hit it.....I would've done WAY better using a baseball bat and a putter.

I was :turrible:

I know TaylorMade makes good clubs, but a lot of it is comfort.

Yes and no. If you want forgiving, you will want "Player Improvement" clubs. No needs to get "blades" or "players" clubs which will be more expensive - they will simply hurt your game more than help it. Player Improvement clubs are what I had for my first set as an adult. As I improved and took the game more seriously (while still having a lot of fun) then I started to pay more money for the clubs that are suited for my handicap and playing style. Any fitting specialist should know to start off a newbee with "Player Improvement" clubs. Personally, I went with Pings and think they make a very nice player improvement club, but then got away from them as I improved.

In terms of drivers, the Taylormade R1 is the hot driver right now and so is the Callaway RZR but that won't help a person out who is just playing because they won't be as forgiving. If I had to start someone new off with clubs, that had any sort of disposable income and wanted to play with hopes of improving for the future...

Ping irons. Taylormade RBZ driver, woods to match. Putter - whatever feels right, no need to spend money on one now...as you get more serious you tend to blame your putter for everything and then you end up with 10 in your garage. I believe Jim Furyk won a tournament last year with a putter that he found in a used/discounted bin just a week before the tournament.

EDIT: Found the Furyk story. He won with a $39 used putter. I get my ass kicked all over the course with a $400 putter. Makes sense.

I'm a fan of PGA Superstore. Better than a country club fitting in my opinion - and it is free. PGA Superstore has the best technology compared to a Golfsmith or Golf Galaxy, however both of those can get the job done. I'm pretty sure Dick's Sporting Goods even has a fitting screen and a decent selection now.

No reason to overspend on your first set of clubs. Do that on your second and third sets as your needs change.

Shot an 86 last weekend... My 5th or 6th time under 90... I realized 3 years ago that I don't need to hit the shit out of the ball all the time but to just move up an iron and take a smooth swing instead. It took me to 30 to learn that and all of those scores under 90 came since I changed my approach :)
