I felt the same way but 3 things made it start to make sense for me.

1. Reading that last week Buffalo media said something to the effect that he was super talented but is more suited to play the weakside in a 4-3 and was a little miscast playing a MLB in a 3-4.

2. He is everything Flus dreams about physically; Long, Fast and Physical. He is the only linebacker I have seen that matched Urlacher's size/speed combination. He is 6-5! Passing lanes are drastically different when someone 6'5 with 4.4 speed is occupying them.

3. He came into the league at 19. It sounds like instincts could be questionable before but last year his pass defense took a leap up and he had maybe the best in the league. According to PFF he led all linebackers in pass breakups and forced incompletions last year.

It looks like its possible that Poles picked up an off the ball linebacker with Urlacher size and speed that is finally coming into his own mentally and could turn out to be a force. I am only basing that on his dramatic rise in pass defense last year and the number of drinks I have had but I will defend it until he proves otherwise or someone has a better explanation for his pass defense numbers last year.

Leslie Frazier runs a Tampa 2 guy with Jim Johnson's blitz scheme mixed in so his base D is a 4-3 and Edmunds played Mike rather than Will.
You're not far off on the Edmunds is a better weakside LB thought

Multiple scouts say Edmunds, as a middle linebacker, might be miscast and would be more effective coming from the weak side. He didn’t have a great season in coverage; he allowed 476 yards as the nearest defender, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, which ranked sixth-highest among linebackers who were targeted at least 25 times.
Edmunds was terrible in coverage until this year where he had a 91 coverage grade per PFF.

Would love Key and Ebukam.

I think we are in for one shocker…. Bears trade for Tunsil or Buckner
I thought we would end up with one of these two this offseason. Tunsil might have talked his way out of a few teams radar with his "reset the market" Hes 29 and wants to be the highest paid LT in the league. At this point I believe we are drafting Tackle and Center/Gaurd. We have a couple bodies from last year, the kid from Illinois was pretty solid before the injury.
As far as the D, its a deep class and I could see another tradeback to pick up some day two defensive talent. This rebuild isnt a one year fix, I think we will have at least 4 to 6 rookies playing this year with the hope we hit on some later round talent.

I could see him dangling Jaylon Johnson for Buckner, Montez Sweat or even Josh "jags" Allen just cause he fits the mold.

I know he takes a bunch of shit around here, but this article has some good insight into yesterday and what to expect going forward.

This is not my personal opinion, but doesn't this person look like a Poles type of player?

Byron Murphy
CB · Age: 25
Murphy proved with the Cardinals in 2022 he can play on the outside; his bona fides in the slot were already established. At a position with high variance, Murphy has been a steady starter since a rocky rookie year.
Young and versatile at a position of need (CB2 or slot) sure sounds like a Poles type of player.
