So do the Bears really need to sign a FA tackle this offseason or did they strike gold with Leatherwood?

This.

There’s a world of difference in cost between LT & RT. It is an even bigger gulf between RT & C. The two biggest holes on our line are at RT and C. Now, yes, there is the “I don’t believe in Jones” crowd. For better or worse, that dude’s playing LT at least another season. There’s the “**** Whitehair, that overpaid bum needs to leave” crowd. You’re not wrong, but, as the Wu Tang Clan said, CREAM.

So, though there are crowds that want to blow up the whole line, there are really 2 holes. RT and C. A dude that would have to be signed to exclusively play RT is fucking expensive. I don’t know if you can get a starting quality RT in FA for less than 15 mil. In all seriousness, it might cost more than 20, yeah, for a fucking RT.

Apart from the fact that I like Jenkins to come in because he fills both the RT and C positions, even if we don’t sign him, being able to sign a swing T and a C in FA may actually be the same cost tier as 1 starting RT.

As far as C goes, we have the guy we signed who hasn’t done shit, the guy we drafted who’s on IR, and we have another guy we drafted in Jatyre Carter. Carter is a crazy good athlete that projects to G. Getsy has been around the Swiss Army knife of Jenkins. Maybe Carter can get some burn at C next season? I don’t know, just empty speculation at this point.

Anyway, a major focus of the next 4 games has to be on if Leatherwood could be the RT. I didn’t think he could be. I like being wrong about shit like this.

1. One player does not fill two positions.

2. Jenkins looked terrible at RT this year. I think they moved him back to LG.

Yes. He does not fill two positions at the same time. By signing him, he has the potential to play both, but cannot fill two positions at the same time. Thanks for the clarification.

He has the ability to play both.

I’m not sure I like him more than Whitehair. There are some dudes that do. I’m not one. All things considered, I’d rather put him at C and keep Whitehair at LG. Of course, the issue of spending that much money for a dude that eventually plays C can be the deciding factor. There’s an argument to just sign the best C on the market, and maybe I’d feel that if I was more secure with Leatherwood starting and signing a swing T.
