Cubs should saying no way. The Sox have no real cards to play. There hand is out and they can't bluff. The Cubs have all the leverage so they should have no obligation to give in to the Sox who have no leverage at all. If the Sox didn't already name Cherington there new GM and there was any real way of seeing Theo go back to the Sox at the same position then maybe the Cubs would need to give in. But the way it sits now, the Cubs hold all the cards and the Sox don't do say no no no

Sources tell me that Cubs are prepared to be fair but will not give in to the Red Sox. We'll see who blinks.

If the Red Sox blink first they have to take Tony Campana.

It'd be just the Cubs' luck to have Theo change his mind because of all this or have something occur where he goes back to Boston.

Hasn't Theo already told them that he wont be back after 2012? Now look at what the ownership group has been doing in terms of trashing people who have left the team. And it will only get more toxic if Theo stays. The Red Sox owners are a bunch of assholes who are overly worried about winning the perception war. Thats why theyre trashing Francona after he's gone and they want to make it look like they "won" by losing Theo.

Oh, I agree. This is just exposing their organization for the tools they are.

@thekapman: BoSox trying to save face because Theo wants out of that insane asylum. He picked Cubs over the Red Sox and Boston fan base can't believe it

They can take Wells.

I'd be all for that sort of comp.

Why give up an MLB player? That's silly.

I actually wonder if Vitters could be the guy to go. Honestly, I wouldn't mind that too much. If we can get Theo for less, fantastic, but if we had to give up Vitters, I would still be very very happy.

Kap says they want an insane package that the Cubs won't agree to. I have a bad feeling that it is centered around something more than Vit.

Losing a lot of respect for the Red Sox organization.

He doesn't wanna be there. Take the money and go suck a fat one.

Lucchino is :turrible:

Kudos to Ricketts for standing ground instead of trading the "insane package"

It's lame but it's like anything. In their view, it doesnt hurt to ask. If they don't ask for a lot, they won't get a lot. The Cubs are doing the right thing, it seems, and asking the right questions (I remember reading they've asked for guidance from the commissioners office on what is customary or acceptible...Selig probably gave him the same gesture he made when the all star game ended in a tie). I really doubt Theo wants to go back to Boston. I don't think anything their ownership is doing is endearing them to Theo. I think, if anything, it's emboldening his belief that it's time for him to leave.

I think in the end, the Red Sox will take less because they'll realize playing hardball here is cutting off their nose to spite their face. Having Theo back for one year, means that year will be toxic and also that theyll get nothing. But even at that, in the minds of the Red Sox, Theo is gone. They've already accepted that part of it. It's about maximizing the opportunity to save face now. The Cubs just have to wait this out, if the Red Sox are asking for a lot of our young promising (albeit likely overassessed) minor leaguers.

Im with Cpt Obvious. I'd be very happy if they took Vitters even though, even that goes beyond custom.

Theo Epstein Compensation Links: Saturday: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

It's been three days since Red Sox GM Theo Epstein agreed to a five-year contract worth $18.5MM to take over as GM of the Cubs, and now the two teams are discussing compensation for Boston letting Epstein out of the final year of his contract. Yesterday we learned that the Cubs would like to complete the deal with just cash, but the Sox want "something real" in return. Let's keep track of today's compensation talk news here, with the latest up top...

David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com reports that talks between the two sides have grown "increasingly contentious." A source told Kaplan that Boston president Larry Lucchino is "trying to make it very difficult for Epstein to accept his dream situation in Chicago because of his fractured relationship with his one-time protege."
The Red Sox "are believed to be requesting at least two top players from the Cubs’ farm system," according to Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald.
Paul Sullivan of The Chicago Tribune says talks are not expected to be completed this weekend.

Always something...
