The Cubs are carrying 11 pitchers to start the year (really 10 since the 11th guy is a rule 5 pick that hasn't been pitching for more than a couple years) with the addition of Valbuena. The Cubs are going to bring Lopez up at some point early in the season which means one IF is going to have to be sent down. The only IFs with options would be Castro and Barney. I wonder if the Cubs would find a taker for DeWitt or Baker this early in the season.

Depends on how many starters get injured or suck and how desperate teams are to snag that second wild card.

Exactly this a decision that I don't think is going to be made now, but one that they are going to let play out. If LaHair has to go on the DL then that would take care of the issue for a while as well. Also Castillo only has to be on the roster for 90 days before he can get some phantom injury to spend the rest of the year on the DL. So some creative use of options and DL could mean the Cubs don't have to lose anyone.

John Lannan Requests Trade: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Interesting. I don't think the Cubs have much that the Nats might want prospects-wise (that they'd actually give up that is) but since the rumors are that Byrd, Baker, DeWitt etc. are available...

I like Lannan in a swap for one or all of those guys, but who would you bump from the rotation for him? I suppose it is hard to argue that this team wouldn't be better in 2012 with Lannan in the rotation and Shark in the pen, but what is better for 2012 really matters pretty little.

He does have a year of club control left. Plus he probably won't be too expensive. Depends on what the Cubs want but I think this is a long shot.

Yeah I just don't see a spot with the current staff. Maholm and Dempster are going to get a spot due to the contract. Garza because he is the best pitcher the Cubs have, and I think the Cubs want to see what they have in Volstad and Shark. I just think there are other teams that are more desperate for a starter that would offer more than the Cubs could, but I would be more than happy to swap Byrd for Lannan.

Move Shark to the 'pen.

I don't see how that benefits the Cubs longterm since we know what Lannan is basically, but we have no idea what Shark could be as a starter.

They'd potentially send Volstad down before they sent Samardzija down in that situation. Only because they want to see if their Samardzija experiment works first.

He'll aways a bullpen pitcher in my mind.

You might be right, but it would be a huge boost to the Cubs if you are wrong. This is the year to find out for sure as opposed to taking the safe production from a guy like Lannan, whom I like. Same really goes for Volstad.

Yeah, I think Wood will take Samardzija's spot in the rotation by the end of the season. I think Wells will be traded sometime too.

I wouldn't mind getting Lannan for Byrd, but again not sure that really is the best move since the Cubs really do need to see what they have in Volstad and Shark as starters. Gorzo wouldn't be bad as the longman in the pen and another lefty. I wouldn't give up Byrd to get him, but I think that could be a decent target. Certainly would rather have either of them than Lopez.

It looks like the Rays will need to go out and find help behind the plate, writes Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Even though Tampa Bay appears to be in browsing mode at the moment, big name catchers such as A.J. Pierzynski, Geovany Soto, and Kurt Suzuki could all be available. Lower tier possibilities include Miguel Olivo, Chris Snyder, George Kottaras, and Bobby Wilson.

Here's hoping Theo/Jed and Andrew Friedman are buddy buddy.

Soto is the only one that would be available right now since there is no way the White Sox would trade AJ will still alive. Suzuki might be available, but hopefully Soto can be that guy for the Rays. He needs to start hitting some for us to get anything though.

I saw a proposition of Wade Davis for Geovany Soto. I would do Davis and a PTBNL for Soto.
