Garza for Phil Hughes seems like a downgrade to me. Even Dempster for Hughes seems like a downgrade. You're talking about a flyball pitcher who isn't Matt Cain who gets regularly shelled, and that includes last night.

Because you think Phil Hughes will turn into Matt Garza? Garza was a flyball pitcher too before he changed something. Phil Hughes is not as good as Garza though.
If I am dangling Dempster or Garza, Phil Hughes is beneath what I'd be asking for.

Hughes has a lot of potential and I think he'll do good in the NL. Also, the Cubs aren't gunna get much for Dempster so I'll take Hughes. Hold onto Garza then.

Even if it was "not much" in return for Dempster, I don't think you go after Hughes because he's a free agent after next season. That just seems like a non-starter to me.

It's not over, teams are still going to inquire about it, and the Cubs brass is going to have to think about it if the right deal comes along. If Theo said that they are considering trading Castro, it depletes his value and it fucks with his head. Saying this is the safe way to do it.

Mather or Reed Johnson actually could be a nice fit as a right handed bat bench. I don't know if that nets us Feldman or Lowe, but I could see a match there.
Actually looking things over Soriano would actually be a decent fit for the Rangers too. Michael Young hasn't actually been lighting it up as the DH, and they could use that right handed OF to platoon with Murphy. The Cubs would be picking up a ton of salary to make a deal to happen, but Soriano going back to Texas wouldn't be a bad match for everyone involved. Now picking up 95% of the salary wouldn't net a reliever like Lowe in return still though.
