As always the fact that the Cubs have three starting pitchers and a couple of reliever that they wouldn't mind parting with that have been pitching at various levels of ability should make this the most interesting trade deadline since 2004.

From the always reliable Hot Stove Cubbies...
A WOW!! A source just told me the #cubs and #dbacks have talked about a Justin Upton trade in the past week. Other names not known.

It is fun to dream...

I put no stock in the rumor, but a 24 year old all-star like that is exactly the type of piece this team needs.

I'm not believing that one either. I think the Cubs would ask about him, but can't see a trade happening.

He's actually been right lately.

Brandon Morrow ---> DL

So...Garza to Toronto for prospects, Dempster to Texas for lesser prospects?

That is certainly a possibility. It will be interesting to see what moves are made. I wish it was a month later so that some of these would actually happen.

Brewers Prepared To Move Greinke If No Extension: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

This may prevent the Cubs from signing Greinke in the offseason if the new team sets up an extension. On the other hand, if Greinke doesn't agree to an extension, the Cubs could potentially sign him without surrendering a draft pick.

This is also predicated on whether the Cubs believe they can contend sooner rather than later as signing Greinke would be pretty dumb if they don't have a plan in place for short-term contention. I am aware of the concerns with his anxiety etc. but I think he's a good enough pitcher and if you're going to blow that much $ on him, you'd probably have a support system and some happy pills in place.

I know it isn't the most reasonable thing, but I can't help but shake the thought that another top of the rotation starter and a fixed bullpen would make this team look near .500. If Rizzo and Jackson are the real deal you could have something. Lots of ifs in the equation, but something I've been thinking about a while if the market never really develops for Garza.
