Raiders should take a QB. Geno is pretty average and not young. His old team not wanting to pay him says it all. Carroll is going to get them to not be terrible, so it's probably their best shot at a QB high in the draft.

I will add that I think the Jeanty to the Raiders is just a hype train gone out of control. I think guys like Membou, Walker, Johnson, and Shadeur are all more likely picks. I know it's media driven, but I think Spytek even bringing up Jeanty and the story with his kid is a bit of gamesmanship. They had a bad offseason of being the bridesmaid and maybe they perceive the Bears as a Jeanty home and want to let Ben sweat it out for essentially using them. Regardless, that team needs to prioritize other things.

The Raiders had one of the worst secondaries in the league and hired Pete Carroll. Hard to imagine they won't be looking hard at corners. Carroll does love his RB's too. Who knows what Spytek wants or if he actually has control.

I'll say a couple things...

• Raiders are horrible in a lot of areas. They need a lot of help... the least of their concerns should be low cost positions like RB. You can get RBs for cheaper in other ways like free agency. They just ran this cycle with Jacobs. He did nothing for them and left. You're right about the secondary and they just cut a starting corner. I think Johnson is the pick if he runs well, but there's other good options if not.
• I looked at Pete Carroll's drafts before and he didn't draft a RB in the first 2 rounds til year 7 or so (Penny). Granted, he had Lynch, so it's a bit inconclusive. But, there's nothing there that guarantees he'd take one at 6. Historically, those first 7 drafts, he LOADED up on defense.
• Spytek was in Tampa where they didn't prioritize backs (White and Bucky). Why would he take one at 6? Also, I think Spytek has a lot of power. I don't think Carroll had the ability to get that kind of authority from the Raiders. Everyone knows he's old and there's no reason to give him total control when he could be gone in 2-5 years (depending on if he's fired or just retires). Spytek being Brady's buddy, is going to be there a long time. I'm sure Brady did not put a leash on Spytek to cater to an old HC no one else showed much interest in. Ultimately, Spytek has to be happy with the draft picks made when Carroll is eventually gone. He can't bend over backwards to appease him.
• Brady was never part of a team that drafted a RB high. If he has any pull, I see no reason at all for him to advocate for a RB.
• Chip Kelly has two of his OSU backs in this draft. It's a very deep draft for RBs, as we all know. I'm sure he's in everyone's ear saying they should take one in the 2nd.
• Raiders OL is not good at run blocking. 4th last in yards before contact last year. They should grab more linemen before they kill the RB. They'll almost certainly have a good OT available at 6.
• First round RBs in the last decade have been mostly unsuccessful for the team that drafted them. I'm going to go off memory, but I think none have a winning playoff record and many only have one appearance, if any. I think they average less than 5 years with the team (too lazy to verify again, but that's close enough). Fournette was gone after 3. Elliot was one that lasted the longest and the wheels completely fell off and he turned into nothing. Shelf life is horrible. Why do that to Jeanty when they're nowhere close to competing? He'll take 3 years of mileage before they even stand a chance in that division.

Now that I've said all this, I'm sure they'll go ahead and do what everyone says they will and draft Jeanty. For the record, I don't think Jeanty will go to the Raiders, but I do think he'll go by pick 9 before the Bears.

Kiper is most definitely on drugs but I’ve seen Nolan mocked by others in the 2nd too. It’s all over the place with him. Personally, I don’t think he makes it past 20-25 and could even go earlier.

Completely agree. There doesn’t seem to be any real consensus among most players out of the top 10 or so. A lot of disparities among the analysts.

Exactly. Obviously there are different opinions in each draft, but I’ve never seen one like this where there are such wild swings in the predictions.

So no I'm not ready to take a TE or a RB at 10.

For people hoping for the trade gods to call, here's what Breer says about draft day trades (of course, just his best guess):

David, off-hand, I’d say less early, but there could be some action starting in the teens.

Just looking at it logically, I think the separation of Carter and Hunter from the rest of the class, quarterbacks aside, will probably keep the Browns and Giants where they are at Nos. 2 and 3. After that, you probably have a dozen players who are in the same category of prospect, which might kill a team’s motivation to go up from, say, No. 12 to Nos. 6 or 7.

Where the action would begin is when supply is starting to run low at certain positions, and that could happen in the teens.

As much as I think the Bears should go OL or DL at 10, it certainly isn't because I think they should pass on a great talent at rb/te to pick depth for the iOL intentionally.

This type of thinking was why people didn’t want Verse last year at 9.

Who cares where the media has guys? If Poles thinks someone like Conerly is a 8-10 year starter at LT you run the pick up.

This is great, but I’d still also prefer the #7 overall pick instead of the #10 overall pick because of that meaningless victory against Green Bay to end last season.

Meaningless my ass. The Bears basically knocked their asses out of the playoffs by making them play the Eagles. That’s easily worth 4 spots in the draft to me. That and my favorite prospect will be there regardless

Jeanty doesn't appear to have Jahmyr Gibbs speed so how exactly will a 5'8 211lb running back dominate the NFL? Who is his comp?

Hampton is better getting short yardage, a better receiver and a better pass protector. He has the same speed as Matt Forte, not electric but good enough to make long runs too.

I don't want either at #10. Trade back and I take Hampton late and pair him with Swift. That's a better rotation than Jeanty & Swift.

The best Jeanty comp to me is a cross between Gibbs / Monty.

Those two guys are not even on the horizon for the Bears. Consensus seems to be that the tier-2 talent runs ~6-8 guys deep, plus a QB. The Bears should end up with one or two guys in their tier-2 bucket to choose from at #10. They should just take whomever is the highest-rated guy left in the bucket, regardless of position. If it's Walker, fine, take him. If it's Warren, fine, same thing. Tet? Same thing, take him. Johnson? Same thing. Too many people here see filling holes with #10 as meeting need, without recognizing that having top-level talent on the roster is the ultimate need. This isn't complicated...

Agree with this. There not a big gap at OL/DL/Edge at 10 and the picks at 39/41/72. There is a lot of talent to get depth and development picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. There are only a handful of blue chip talent prospects in this draft and if you can get a difference maker at 10 you take it. The Bears do need difference makers that teams game plan around. I don't want a roster of average and slightly above average players. It's where the Packers and Steelers are. Good orgs, and we'll coached, but just won't be able to beat top teams. We all hope Caleb and Rome take them out of that tier, but it wouldn't hurt to add another.

That's such a idealistic and appealing way of avoiding giving an actual player but instead make up an imaginary player based on two likeable guys.... LOL
