The Hawks did look good, I was quite surprised. Personally, I'm still not exactly ready to think they can beat the Oilers, but there was a lot to like about this game. I do think the Blues were just going through the motions though, whereas the Hawks took it more seriously since they're about to begin their series with Edmonton. Quite honestly, the Blues shouldn't have even been there. I don't think they generated more than 2 Grade-A scoring chances all game, and that was only when Subban was immediately put in -- the entire Blues team was pretty much invisible all game. Was that all because of the Hawks defense? I'd say no, I think it was more because the Blues simply had nothing to play for in this game.
That said, I still think the Hawks can win, and I'm rooting for that. Anything can happen with this layoff. Hell, we had upsets left and right last playoffs, and that was a normal year without a huge layoff in the middle. I can't say all my worries about the Hawks are gone after this one game, but they did look better than I thought they would.
Here's the thing: if you have two solid top lines and a decent top-four D, you have a chance. Do the Hawks have that? I'd say they have two top lines, but their top four is still iffy.
The one person I was disappointed in was Debrincat. Guy was pretty much invisible the entire game. Highmore was meh also. De Haan taking multiple penalties -- however ticky-tack, especially the one "hold" -- was also disappointing.
Subban saw Grade-A chances, but Crow really didn't, which I was hopeful he would. Nevertheless, his puckhandling looked solid and will obviously be key for the Hawks.
