Honestly, I think we're looking at $50MM or so of money to play with. That's probably rounded up by a mile or two, but it makes for easy math.

I go for CJ Wilson - priority #1... and I think you can get him for around $15MM per.

There will be a hole at 1B and 3B. I say go after Wright from NYM (there were rumors about him being tradebait before he got hurt... and there are rumors about him being on the block this winter already being whispered around since he came back.) at $15MM.

So you're looking an estimated $30MM there. That leaves you $20MM for a 1B and arbitration raises. We know Garza will get a big raise, and Marshall should as well. So, to be safe, you better look in the $10MM range for a 1B. Berkman anyone?

You can pick up two possible longterm cornerstones with Wright and Wilson. You get experience and leadership with Berkman, who I believe has shown he's healthy again this year. Berkman's not a long term answer, but he can hold the fort until someone form our system (possibly Vitters) is ready.. or we can get look at other FA or trade possibilities in 2-3 years. This also leaves breathing room for the following year, when Demp and Zambo both come off the books... and may open up slots and room for other FA pitchers.

I could get on board with signing Fielder to a 5-year $25MM per contract with a 6th year option... and sign Wilson on top of it. But you'll leave 3B wide open, and little room for arbitration and next year.

What has Garza done to earn a major raise?

No way I want to spend that much this off season but thats just me.

I think that part where he is having a career year. Ya know, 3.68 ERA, over a K an inning, highest K/BB rate of his career, 3.06 FIP, that kinda thing.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Cubs
  1. Minnesota United FC
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
MLB is going to say Garza deserves a raise through arbitration.

These are my 2 options the off-season can play:

Option 1: Sign Fielder and less tier players around him (not counting Rami).

Option 2: Re-sign Pena and more of top tier players (via trade who are good and have bigger contracts or via FA who will get big contracts...ex CJ Wilson)

Every yeah a player goes through their 3 years of arb, always get raises. Hill even got a raise, even tho he shoulda got a pay-cut.

Resign Pena, bring Aramis back, sign one top of the line starting pitchers and sign Cuddyer to play a corner OF spot. Guy can also play other spots on the field and is a great clubhouse guy. Find a way to get Campana some playing time, speed kills and the Cubs need more of it.

I think re-signing Pena, signing a top tier SP (Wilson or Sabathia-doubtful) and an OF may be best option. Then try and trade for a 2B...

Release Fonzie...move Byrd to RF and FA OF to LF, with Jackson taking over in CF. Colvin will be 4th OF/back-up 1B and Campy 5th OF/pinch runner.

Barney to utility (2B and SS), and Baker utility (3B, 2B and 1B).

Trade/non-tender DeWitt

Trade/non-tender Hill: Castillo or Clevenger back-up C to Soto, with good playing time if Soto starts to struggle in '12 again.

This team wouldn't be too bad.

I like to see Fielder signed to 5-6 year deal. Then get Edwin Jackson on 3-4 year deal. Keep A-Ram. Trade Byrd to help save 6.5 mil.

sign cj wilson for like 5 mil per
sign prince for like 10 mil per
sign albert for like 12 per (3rd base)
trade for wright as a back up 3b

these guys would take huge paycuts to come to the cubs.

but seriously. the cubs need pitching....end of story.

What Do You Want In Free Agency?

Either go big or do nothing.

I don't care either way but if Pena is first I'll **** something up.

I feel the same way. either spend the money to win or just go young. Tired of this half ass shit. Stop signing guys like Pena, Byrd, Lopez, Bradly.
