I don't think the Cubs offered the full $200MM if they are skimping on the years. And if they don't significantly outbid the Cards, Pujols has no incentive to leave. He's established in STL with home and restaurant and yada yada. I would've loved for them to blow their wads for Pujols, but they either can't or won't do it, and maybe there's a legitimate reason.

There are other ways to build the team for the future and the now, but it kind of sucks that an opportunity like this will slip away. I guess that's how the cookie crumbles.

Yeah, I dont think it's out of the realm of possibility at all. I don't know why you haver this fatalistic fixation. It makes me wonder if you ever leave your own home (since something bad could happen).

It's not fatalistic, it's realistic  If the Cubs can't outbid the Cardinals and not even the Marlins with their funny money can pry him away, Pujols is staying in STL. It's pretty simple. It also really sucks, but whatcha gonna do?

Let STL be financially handcuffed for a while then. There are other ways to build a team even though it would've been more fun with a Pujols on it.

No, fatalistic is when you only focus on the negative. Thats what you are. I'm the realist. Nothing would surprise me at this point. I speak in terms of both possibilities.

You should really try walking outside.

If the Cubs had offered 6 years, as it has been rumored, the max amount of that deal is $180MM. Maybe Pujols and his agent are bad at math or don't understand inflation, but while we know that the $180MM within those six years may be worth about the same as $220MM over 10 years, all they are seeing is the lump sum. Since none of us are in the room when this is being negotiated this is pure conjecture on my part, but even though Pujols is the best player of this generation (so far) it still is a gamble to give the guy $30MM a year, or $220MM over 10 years. It's possible that Theo and Jed realize that. It's also possible that Ricketts is broke ass broke if he signs off on that investment.

It's also possible that somehow the Cubs pull magic out of their asses and sign Pujols away. Until the deal is officially official, there's always hope, but I'm not holding my breath on it.

No, the Cubs could conceivably offer 220 million over 8 years but pay more upfront. Albert right now is worth 30 million (maybe more). They might go in 35 in the first few years to bring the number down in later years. So, lets say the first four years are 35, thats 4 years-140, and 4 years at 80, which works out to 20 million at the back end. Compared to Zambrano and Soriano, thats a bargain. And the Cubs have the leverage, especially if the manage other costs.

And the good thing about Albert is that he's an all around hitter. So, lets say his HRs drop, he might still end up hitting for average...and vice versa.

Meanwhile, Prince's highest BA is .299.

Im OK with either. And Im not assuming that its one or the other. Either signing can easily be justified and realistically accomplished relative to the other teams in the running.

OK, I have a small rant to share. I've been watching a lot of MLB Network in recent days (for obvious reasons). They've constantly been showing the VW commercial about how people are always mistaken on the lyrics to the song 'Rocket Man'.

OK, this song is like 30-40 years old. Whats the point? Its a stupid aspect of human existence for a commercial to explore since this is a 35 year old donut.

Heyman: Ramirez likely to Milwaukee on 3 years. Cubs likely to trade Zambrano and possibly Soriano.

A lot of this has been mentioned here before. Nevertheless, FYI.

Wow, Harold Reynolds confirms what I've long though, which is that the outfielders nowadays suck.

I know a lot of people are into frontloading the contracts, but I've already explained elsewhere why that's not a good idea. At this point I guess we'll just wait and see.

Yeah, TVM, which you erroneously attributed to "inflation". The TMV concept goes out the window. It's really more beneficial to pay for the more productive years in a way that's commensurate with the expected production. And that goes for the life of the contract.

All this speculation is quite annoying.

Per GordonEdes of Twitter: Ortiz has officiallly accepted arbitration. He's headed back to Boston.

Thats a solid starting point. 7 years gives him another bite of the apples down the road.

They're just driving up the asking price for the Marlins or Angels. Lol

Probably true, but they are being bigger players than I think a lot thought they would.
