No they aren't. But if it helps you out, they are both cut and dry
Lol yes they are. This year, there was a general consensus by everyone, except you, that the cubs were the best team during the regular season.

Like I've been saying..
When it comes to awards and stuff they don't go by metrics, the still go with the old fashion stats ..

Wins. IP. Ks. ERA.. Etc.....

Hendricks was worthy of the award. This year he came into his own as a pitcher. I believe his turning point was when Contreras got him to trust his curve. That became a weapon that changed him from a 2 pitch pitcher into a pitcher that could show you a whole new arsenal later in the game.

But you have to look at up until that point. He was the 5. 6-6 ERA was meh. Then he took off. Believe me the voters looked at how dominate he was in the play offs and he will have their attention.

Remember the votes were cast before the play offs.

Lester I believe would have won it if he got that #20. He didn't and Max's numbers were better.

It was Borzello who taught him to trust his curve, not Contreras. The Athletic did an entire article about it.

Thats not true. They are some old timers, but there are plenty of young voters. Having two Cubs in the final 3 means the votes got split. Max hit the big numbers in areas people still look at. ESPN had Max winning the whole time with Lester behind him. They had Hendricks like 8th. ERA is the oldest pitching stat and the last two years the ERA leader has not won. That means they are looking at much more than "old fashion" stats.

A grad of my kids' HS wins the Cy Young, and I am not happy. First time I was. Not this time.

Hendricks was fighting an unwinnable battle. I feel like if the players actually voted on this Hendricks would have won. And in fact, the players version of the award(players choice award for NL outstanding pitcher) Hendricks did win. The problem he was always going to face was writers were trying to find a reason to vote against him because he doesn't look the part. So, the argument for him was never going to go anywhere because they see the defense the cubs had as great and think... well that's why. In my estimation, the problem with that logic is if you know you have a great defense and you are a ground ball pitcher of course you're going to pitch to contact rather than trying to strike everyone out. The fewer pitches you have the throw the longer you can go into games.

I also don't think writers truly appreciate what he did where as players actually understand how remarkable it was. Not to say pitching is easy but when you have the tools Kershaw or Scherzer do it's a hell of a lot easier getting guys out than trying to do so with an 88 mph sinker. I also think that something that didn't get brought up enough in this discussion is just consistency. If you ask any player what a pitchers job is they are going to tell you something to the effect of "give the team a chance to win." Here's a remarkable stat for you. Hendricks had 9 starts where he gave up 0 runs. He had 8 starts where he gave up 1 run. He had 8 starts where he gave up 2 runs. And he had 3 starts each where he gave up 3 and 4 runs. Literally every game he pitched in was a winnable game.

At the end of the day, I don't think anyone can realistically say that any single pitcher did their job better than Hendricks. Scherzer pitched more innings. Kershaw as lights out when he pitched. But Hendricks doesn't get to pick and choose when he comes out of the game. And unlike Kershaw, he didn't miss a start. He lead baseball in ERA when he was in the game. He's certainly not the most talented pitcher but for my money he was the one who did what he was called on the best this year. Need a game 6 win vs Kershaw? He's got you. Need a game 7 start in arguably the craziest WS environment ever? He's got you.
