Normally, I like to post a Monthly Music thread featuring great stuff from the past that you would never hear on any radio station. Makes me sad there is so much great music most people have never heard and stuff that will surely fade into obscurity in the face of all the horrible music that has been created in the last 20 years.

So, this month I wanted to give you a different spin and great performance on a familiar song. The Rolling Stones are one of my favorite bands but their live performances are always highly overrated from a technical and performance standpoint. The crowd gets all excited, the light and stage show is great but the Stones are usually very sloppy and often sound terrible. Over the last 15 years Jagger has adopted the Sinatra signing style and talks rather than sings through the song.

All that said here is a great version of the famous Honkey Tonk Women with Sheryl Crow. The band is tight and full of energy. Keith Richards is actually sober and interested. Jagger actually sings the songs versus talking it.

BTW, Honkey Tonk Woman was the Stones second attempt to record this song. The original version had a different name. Bonus points to anyone that knows the original

As a 20 year old young adult, thank you. I can't stand the radio, and I love this type of music and always looking for stuff from the past to listen to.

Sheryl Crow is a two-bit musical parasite. The only reason she's still relevant is that she somehow manages to get mixed in with big names. Contrary to that opinion, she vocally rescued the song. Richards should have his mic turned off or go back to being uninterested and Jagger sounds like he's lost what little range he had. I can see why he'd be talking lyrics now.

I won't disagree with you on the band though. Chuck Leavell on the ivories is always a win.

Love the Stones, but they haven't made a good album in 30 years. I agree that their live performances are terrible -- I couldn't imagine paying to see them now. Exile, Sticky Fingers, and pretty much all the Brian Jones-era stuff is some of my favorite.

I tend to agree that the Stones are incredibly overrated. That said Exile on Main Street is often rated one of the top albums of all time and some critics have called Gimme Shelter the greatest rock song ever. So you have to give them tons of props

I have that title reserved for the Grateful Dead.

At least the Stones have record sales to speak for them, so I don't think they're that overrated. They've just fallen like all the other Brit Invasion bands, in the sense that they just haven't been relevant for decades now. Personally, I like a lot of their songs (Paint It Black would be in my all-time top 50) but my interest doesn't go too far past a greatest hits album.

I think they were great for about seven years. They fell off after that, but how many rock bands have been great longer then 7 years? That seems to be the shelf life for great bands. The very best bands aren't good for longer than that.

The Stones were amazing from around '65-72. The last four albums of that era are nearly spotless.

The fact that you could fill up an album with good songs recorded after they were at their peak is a real anomaly. I can't think of another band you can do that with.

Fade to black is the only stones song I can listen to without thinking... "Wow... This sucks."

Really? Songs like Moonlight Mile and Winter are just beautiful. Gimme Shelter is considered one of the greatest songs ever written. The guitar riffs in Honky Tonk Woman, Can't you hear me knocking and Brown Sugar are some of the most recognized in all of music. Brian Jones was a freakin genius

I was never a Stones fan, but I can "understand" what some get from their early stuff.

When did Jagger do that "androgynous duet" thing with Bowie? They've sucked since before whenever that was, but it was probably more due to all the drugs/alcohol rather than any lack of original talent.
