Omelet's Monthly Music thread

This month we focus on one the of the geniuses of Rock and Soul, Van Morrison. This guy has been the voice of a generation in the 70s and one of the great poets in history. His career has spanned nearly 50 years and he has written hundreds of truly great and powerful songs. Numerous famous musicians like Springsteen and Bob Seeger say they became musicians because of him. Often moody and reclusive, he does, says and plays the way he wants.

Most young music fans have barely heard of him but rock critics think of him as a music god. Rolling Stone named Astral Weeks as the 16th greatest album of all time and many critics call his live album Too Late To Stop Now one of the top 5 live albums of all time. He wrote a haunting song called Almost Independence Day that I have listened to every July 3rd for 35 years

Here is a really cool Video of Van Morrison, Tom Jones and Jeff Beck doing Bring it on home/Trouble in mind

I agree with you that Van Morrison is great; I don't agree with you that Jeff Beck or Tom Jones are.

I'm not a fan of everything Van Morrison has done, but I do have a deep appreciation.

Beck has had his moments, but again not a fan of everything he has done.

Tom Jones... what goes up, must...

Love this song:

The thing with Morrison is that he has written hundreds of fine songs that it's tough to single any of them out.

Unlike many groups that had a 4-6 year shelf life, Van has written great songs for decades. He best stuff you will never hear on the radio. I just ran across this demo of Redwood Tree yesterday. The words are somewhat different than the final album version

I'll expect better next month.

Almost 45 years ago, Joe Cocker decided to put together a world class band and go on tour with only 3 weeks practice. That band was called Mad Dogs and Englishmen and they toured some of the biggest stadiums in America. This was before all the mega stadium tours later in the 70s and was considered a real event.

Under the musical direction of the great Leon Russell who served as band director Cocker assembled a cast of all star talent. The list includes: Russell on piano, Chris Stainton on Piano, Bobby Keyes (Rolling Stones horn player), Drumming great Jim Keltner, Carl Radle, Jim Price and Rita Cooledge on back up vocals. Many consider the live album produced as one of the best ever. Here is a little clip of them doing an impromptu performance in a bar after the concert

I saw them about a 2 years after this and have seen Cocker play many times over the years. He always surrounds himself with the best musicians and his shows are a blast

"Lord, Lord, Lord miss Lawdy….well you sure look good to me"
