It doesn’t make any sense.

Presumably when you win a mini bidding war and tamper to acquire Cousins for pretty big money and several years, you have other ideas for what resources you can fill with a first round pick. Not the exact same position with a guy who’s clearly a reach.

The Falcons are so fucking dumb.
Makes sense to them. Better them than us.

Pace over-compensating after coming here and saying he would ideally like to draft a quarterback every year.

What if….they were so worried about the tampering punishment they went QB this year instead of next year?

So they sign Cousins, who causes the tampering punishment, only to draft his replacement one year early.

The only way I can make logical sense of it, is if Goodell told ATL that they needed to absolutely needed to blow their pick on a reach at QB, locking them into either Penix or Nix redraft, or they were going to lose the pick tampering.

Yeah but you pay cousins that much?
Yes. It's the modern NFL. It's monopoly money. Who cares. You see how much the cap just went up? Plus with little Mikey on the rookie deal, it's no biggie. I expect him to be in the field in two years.

He was the best QB is CFB last year, it's not THAT crazy. Would I have done it? Nah, but I've seen worse.... (like JJ getting drafted in the first round.)

I believe that Penix has potentially a great NFL career ahead of him and that he is super talented. Unfortunately for him, he could spend several years on bench depending on Cousins' health. If they wanted him maybe they should have just rolled with that, but I think they did the Cousins move because that division is there for the taking right now.

I like drafting Penix and although a big gamble with health his arm talent is undeniable. You can't say he went off the board early with JJ and 10 and Nix at 12.

The Cousins contract is the head scratcher. I assume he plays for two years and they cut him with a 45 mil cap hit. Ouch.

I really don’t get this from any angle.

Penix, imo, has the potential to be the second best QB in this draft. Almost certainly he is a better NFL QB than Nix or JJ assuming he can stay healthy. He’s also 23 years old and probably the most NFL ready QB today, even ahead of CW, which is why the Falcons seem like a completely non-sensical destination. The only way it would make sense is if you are worried about Cousins health and/or age but then why sign him to that contract with that much guaranteed money? I don’t know the rules, but can a rookie demand a trade outside of draft night like Eli did? The other thing is Cousins agent saying they didn’t know this was coming. No one in the FO thought to call the franchise QB who you just gave $100m to that hasn’t played a snap that you were considering taking a QB in the top ten? This isn’t some scenario where a guy “fell” to you and just happened to be there. It essentially was an iron clad guarantee that Penix would be there at 8. I’ve gotta find a Falcons message board, that’ll be good for some laughs.

Before yesterday I would have a guessed a competent NFL team wouldnt spend 9 figures on a new QB free agent and then also use a top 10 pick on his replacement before their guy had even played a snap.

I quote myself from a Tuesday #calledit post, apparently NFL GMs agreed with me to some extent:

"Most undervalued players: Nix, Penix, Pearsall"

I am a big fan of the Bo Nix and Sean Payton marriage. It can work if they give it time, but still gonna be tough to get out of the enormous shadow of Reid & Mahomes...

(Quite literal in Reid's case)

I don't know what Atlanta was thinking, but I am very grateful they left the Bears newest receiver on the board....so whateves.....
