I wouldn't hate it if Penix was 20, 21 years old but not when he's about to turn 24. Assuming Kirk stays healthy post-Achilles, it means Penix is likely 26 at the earliest before starting at QB with a decent chance of it not happening until he turns 27 or 28 depending on how Kirk plays. Think Penix is more likely to be traded (probably by a new GM after this season goes sideways due to not enough improvements) before starting a game for the Falcons and at a worse trade value.

I really don’t get this from any angle.

Penix, imo, has the potential to be the second best QB in this draft. Almost certainly he is a better NFL QB than Nix or JJ assuming he can stay healthy. He’s also 23 years old and probably the most NFL ready QB today, even ahead of CW, which is why the Falcons seem like a completely non-sensical destination. The only way it would make sense is if you are worried about Cousins health and/or age but then why sign him to that contract with that much guaranteed money? I don’t know the rules, but can a rookie demand a trade outside of draft night like Eli did? The other thing is Cousins agent saying they didn’t know this was coming. No one in the FO thought to call the franchise QB who you just gave $100m to that hasn’t played a snap that you were considering taking a QB in the top ten? This isn’t some scenario where a guy “fell” to you and just happened to be there. It essentially was an iron clad guarantee that Penix would be there at 8. I’ve gotta find a Falcons message board, that’ll be good for some laughs.

My take as well. I don't get it from any angle.

I thought Joel Klatt had one of the best takes here, I think timestamped the video to start right.

But essentially, it was saying ATL was married to Cousins, so you don't get to go to the club and be single.

It makes sense to me because I don't think Penix was the most NFL ready of the bunch. He could stand learning from a vet and there shouldn't be any pressure to start him early.

I don't care how long Cousins' contract is, he's old and has never been all he's cracked up to be. I think having him train is "young" replacement makes perfect sense.

One of the first times I can ever remember agreeing with a Klatt take. I actually feel sorry for Penix. He’s the most ready to play QB in the draft and also going to be 24 years old. At least he gets top 10 money, but it’s about the worst case scenario outside of completely dropping and going somewhere like KC or Buffalo.

If they knew they liked Penix that much, they probably should've just gotten Justin as a filler for a year or two and let Penix beat him out if that's how it played out.
Fields didn't want to go there

That’s probably not true… out of his own mouth, he talked well about the players and team. I’m saying before signing Kirk at all… just skip big spending on QB and go in with Fields/Penix.

He also said there was an issue in going to Atlanta because of hometown issues....its entirely possible he preferred Pittsburgh to Atlanta

If Kirk wasn’t there, I doubt he’d prefer the option where he’s going in being told he’s a backup to the clear cut starter going into a contract year. Not to mention, Atlanta has better weapons and OL.

People trying to rationalize, but it just makes zero sense. They could have picked a player that would actually play the next 2 seasons. They picked a guy at 8 who they know will hold a clipboard for 2 years. At 8...

I get it sort of - Cousins is 35, so injury concerns are greater. If you get down to end of season and you’re in the hunt and Cousins gets injured…well- this is how you get a high level backup in place for a manageable salary for a long duration.
Green Bay model - Roger’s and Love sat for several seasons behind solid starters and learned the position.

That is A LOT of salary cap committed to a place holder.

It could possibly work, but I’ll just say that from the instances I’ve seen of a guy sitting for a couple of years to take over, only has worked when the guy he’ll be replacing, has been with the team, and in the offense for some years. This will be both Cousins’ and Penix’s first year with the Falcons. Cousins still has to learn everything for himself, and will not be in the best spot to focus any real energy into mentoring Penix, this off-season.
