Any positive news or posts about Justin Fields makes a segment of this message board crash out. It’s weird, and it’s been that way since I began reading the posts on this site over a year ago.
🤷🏿‍♂️

I swear to God.

I wonder if the Jones stuff came from Fields camp or the Steelers - the Jags stuff didn't apparently come from either the Steelers or Jaguars. This Daniel Jones stuff only makes Fields look better. The Steelers want to play coy but if they like Fields and are playing hardball - they gotta start to sweat. If they don't care if he walks, they start planting stories why and trash him but they've already started to have Pro Fields stuff come out in media, so to turn around so abruptly would be too quick.

You want me to go through a million post in the offseason? When did I say Fields was a savior?
Wait. So, we can just accuse someone of saying something and when asked to prove it say "I can't dig through a million posts!"?

(And if it's the offseason you should have more time!)

I hope Fields gets a #1 roll somewhere. He's an exciting watch and plays hard. Would be great with a run 1st type of O that could use a big play now and then. People shouldn't hate on the Bear or CW over this. The Bear were moving on even if CW wasn't in this draft and did Fields a solid by trading him to where he wanted to go. Apparently there were 3 other offers that I'd suspect were a bit better but they let him choose out of respect. No reason to dis him or CW. Never my intent but play compares come up in discussion. I don't think either is a finished product. At least I hope not.

Both had their development stifled by Poles' bargain bin OL and Eberflus' dumb ass. Neither are finished products by any means!

The market for him if he hits FA is super interesting. Last year the QB salaries for the 19th,20th and 21st highest paid QBs were:
Geno - $25M
Minshew - $12.5M
Darnold - $10M

Given how Cousins got $180M/4 with $100M guaranteed after coming off of a torn achilles - he could absolutely exceed Geno's contract. There's no middle class in terms of QB salaries (Quarterback Contracts and Salaries | Over The Cap) and it's wild.

There may be a world where fields is getting $25 million/yr in FA but it isn't this one.

"I think he's gotta be careful," cautions Fittipaldo. "How many times, if you're Justin Fields, do you want to start over? He had at least two, maybe three offensive coordinators, in Chicago. He just had last year with Arthur Smith, and I thought it was a pretty good marriage for the six weeks they were together. If I'm Justin Fields and I have an opportunity to come back to the Pittsburgh Steelers and they let me know I'm their guy, I'm not getting to free agency. I'm signing that, let's say, two-year $30 million deal, and I'm telling the Steelers, 'Let's go.' If I'm your guy, let's go because I don't want to go to another place and start over. Going from team to team to team, that's not going to work out for the long-term. He'd be crazy not to do a deal before free agency."

2/$30M is what keeps on popping up from Steelers beat reporters.

How much do you think he gets, for how long and with who?
I'm with Discus: $10-$15 mil a year seems right.

This idea that someone is going to make Fields their preferred starter for multiple years at $20-$25 mil a year (which is lower-end starter money) seems fanciful.

I can see it now, though: Fields signs a 2-year veteran-backup-money deal, and people say, "See, he signed a multi-year deal! 2 is multiple!"

That's more the range I'd expect. 2 years 25-30 million

If they're willing to reject the Steelers offer to hit FA - they have to feel confident that they can fetch more on the open market or don't want to be there long-term. Given there's publicly been interest on both sides - it's fair to think that it's a money thing.

Baker got 3/$100M with $50M guaranteed in an extension and Kirk got 4/$180M with $100M on the open market. If you see them as equal players (they're pretty close IMO and given Baker was younger and not coming back from a terrible injury, it's easy to see him as the better player) - Kirk got nearly 40% more on the open market.

QB contracts in free agency are notoriously expensive.

If they can't come to terms but really want him - I could see them placing a transition tag on him.

Transition tag as a RB, or as a QB?

Good opportunity for you to learn what that transition tag is!

What are the different types of NFL franchise tags?

There are three types of franchise tags: the non-exclusive tag, exclusive tag and transition tag.

NON-EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag allows the player to sign an offer sheet with another team. The original team has the right to match the offer or receive two first-round draft picks in compensation if the player leaves. This is the most common type of tag.

EXCLUSIVE TAG: This tag completely binds the player to his team. His agent is prohibited from seeking an offer sheet.

TRANSITION TAG: This tag works like the nonexclusive franchise tag, except it only provides the original team the right to match the other team's offer. If the original team decides not to offer a matching bid, it gets no compensation when the player leaves.
