The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly decided that J.J. McCarthy will be their starting quarterback in the 2025 season, according to a report by Tom Pelissero. Additionally, Aaron Rodgers is not an option for head coach Kevin O’Connell.

“The likely scenario now is that the Vikings will roll with last year’s first round draft pick J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback in 2025. I would anticipate they’re going to continue to pursue a veteran, but this will be a backup situation. I do not expect it to be Aaron Rodgers. Look for J.J. McCarthy, barring something unforeseen, to be the Vikings’ starting quarterback in 2025.”

Pelissero also mentioned that the Vikings made an offer similar to the Colts’ to sign Daniel Jones, but the former Giants quarterback preferred the opportunity in Indianapolis. After falling short in their attempt to win the Super Bowl with Sam Darnold, Minnesota is ready to start a new project

Are the Falcons really planning to keep QB Cousins?

atl.png
Unless they’re just lying to everyone who asks, yes. As of Wednesday morning, the Falcons were continuing to tell Kirk Cousins -- and potentially interested teams -- they have no plans to move on from the quarterback even though he’s making $27.5 million in fully guaranteed salary this year. And yes, even though they plan to start 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix Jr.

Releasing Cousins prior to Sunday would trigger a $65 million dead-money cap hit but would prevent his $10 million 2026 roster bonus from becoming fully guaranteed. Trading him would trigger a comparably modest $37.5 million dead-money cap hit, but it’s hard to imagine an acquiring team being willing to take on that $27.5 million salary, plus at least $10 million more in 2026 at this point.

The Sunday trigger date for Cousins' 2026 roster bonus becoming guaranteed isn’t a big part of this equation from the Falcons’ standpoint. They paid him a $50 million signing bonus and a $12.5 million salary last year when they signed him to that four-year, $180 million contract. If they released him before Sunday, they’d have paid him $90 million for one year. If they release him after Sunday, they’ll have effectively paid him $100 million for one year. But all of the guarantees in Cousins’ contract have offsets, so if they released him and he signed with a new team, any money he made from the new team would be refunded to Atlanta.

Keeping Cousins on the roster this season probably isn’t the best thing for Penix, because if Penix struggles (as young QBs often do), Falcons fans and possibly some people in the building will clamor for Cousins to replace him. But the Falcons ultimately could decide it’s the best thing for them.

Remember, the entire premise behind selecting Penix last year after signing Cousins was that there’s no such thing as having too much cover at the QB position. If Penix were to get injured, they’d have a playable starting option. And Cousins, perhaps to his detriment in this case, isn’t the kind of guy to kick and scream in an effort to get out of his situation. So for now -- if we’re taking the Falcons at their word -- they plan to have him on the roster as Penix’s $27.5 million backup. The fact that the game of quarterback musical chairs is nearing its end and Cousins is still on Atlanta’s roster indicates that they might not be bluffing. -- Dan Graziano, national NFL reporter

QB Rodgers a free agent for first time after release from Jets
nyj.png
For the first time in a career that will likely land him in the Hall of Fame, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a free agent.

It became official at 4 p.m. Wednesday, the start of the league year, when Rodgers was released by the New York Jets in a long-anticipated move. The Jets do not plan to announce the procedural move, according to a source, but it's expected to appear on the NFL's evening transaction wire. Basically, the team declared its intentions last month.

He's now permitted to sign with any team, with the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers showing the most interest in the four-time MVP.

It has been said many times, but it would be funny if Aaron Rodgers was to follow Favre and end up in Minnesota.

And it would be even better if his career ended like Farve’s did with one of the Bears defenders standing over him while he lay motionless on the field.
Finally something we agree on.

The Steelers have gone to Plan D

Sources: QB Rudolph headed for Steelers reunion
PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers agreed to a two-year deal with quarterback Mason Rudolph, bringing their 2018 third-round pick back into the fold after a season with the Tennessee Titans, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

Securing Rudolph while the Steelers await a decision from Aaron Rodgers gives their barren quarterback room a veteran option with starting experience. The Steelers also previously signed former Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson to a futures deal.

The Fields to the Jets is a disaster waiting to happen. Another defensive coach and another incompetent organization with no history of great QB development. I will at least be curious to see what his chemistry is like with Garrett Wilson, but I don't have much hope that Fields will be anything more than a bridge QB for the next guy to take over a year from now, a la Mitch Trubisky with Pittsburgh.

It's actually kind of crazy how similar their career trajectories are with each other. Trubisky spent a year with BUF to backup Josh Allen, and then went to another team as the bridge guy to a rookie QB before fading into obscurity as a backup for the rest of his career. Fields is well on track to be on that same path.

Trubisky never got $40 million in two years. Already ahead of Trubs in that regard.

So, if Russ signs with Cleveland, he won’t be promised the starting job like he was last season in Pittsburgh.

Pickett says he'll get a chance to start, is OK with Russell Wilson pursuit

The Cleveland Browns' quarterback situation remains unsettled with few starting options available in free agency, but new addition Kenny Pickett said he has been told he will get the chance to compete to be QB1 in 2025.

The Browns on Wednesday officially announced the trade for Pickett, the No. 20 overall pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022 NFL draft, sending the Philadelphia Eagles a 2025 fifth-round pick and quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
