Twitter is not a source. Twitter is the method a source uses to send his message. There's all kinds of good, reliable stuff and all kinds of garbage on Twitter. What matters is who the source is.

(And even then, even the professionals are speculating most of the time.)

You can keep the bait, not going to play the semantics game with you. Troll elsewhere to catch your fish.

The speculation changes by the hour. The only two things anyone knows with reasonable certainty is that the Red Sox want Lester and he would like to play there. If the numbers were where he wanted them the ink would be drying right now. They clearly aren't and the most reasonable speculation is that he doesn't want to move on from the Boston possibility until they move on from him and even that is just a semi educated guess. Everything else is just noise.

He also has a couple of teams to go through the process with and see where they are and what they have to offer.

He is going to weigh all of his options before signing with the Cubs. ;)

OBviousy I could be wrong....but I got a feeling.....

I don't see him realistically signing in St. Louis, they don't seem the type to drop big bucks on a SP unless they develop their own like a Wainwright. Going after Lester isn't a cards move. Not their MO.

I see them as the cubs in the Anibal Sanchez situation. They were never gonna sign him, but they're going to drive up the price/give his agent leverage to a team that will sign him. Smart move against a division opponent.

LAD: Tied to trading for Hamel.
Bos: Sign Lester or trade for Hamel.
SFG: Tied to signing Lester

On the surface the 2 top lefties have better options going on.

The reality here is they are trying to upgrade Wood and Jackson.

Depth is
LH: Wood, Doubront, Jokish
RH: Jackson, Turner

It would be risky but they could try to roll the dice on Turner and Jokish. Given no one expected them to contend until Soler, Bryant and Baez have adjusted. Still Turner may become more. Jokish was keeping pace with Hendricks every year together. Something to look into. Next year they could go after Price and another young arm that is on the market.

By then we would know what Arrieta is. TOR or not. Hendricks (MLB talent or dumb luck). Turner meets his potnetial etc. At that point they would have a better understanding of their needs and they would have Russell and Almora ready which opens up trade avenues from a surplus.

The Cubs have made a significant offer to Jon Lester, according to David Kaplan. *Kaplan*desribes the offer as north of $135M over 6 years*(See video below). *He also mentions that the Giants are serious in their pursuit and that it will come down to them, the Red Sox, and the Cubs. *I have to say this should go along way toward soothing concerns about whether the Cubs are willing to spend. *Whether it will be enough remains to be seen.

Part of me thinks this might be like the edwin Jackson situation where they feel they need to make a strong acquisition this offseason to show they are doing something positive. .

I still think a 7th yr may be needed to win him over Boston and maybe SF

No it doesn;t/ It's David Kaplan. Plus there are loads of reports of Lester visiting the Cardinals next week.

No what doesn't? That offering 135 mil isnt showing the cubs are willing to spend..

What does visiting the cards have to do with their offer and willing to spend

Personally, I only view the willingness or commitment to spend as actually landing someone when paying those big dollars. The willingness to spend to get Tanaka, Sanchez, and Martin hasn't helped in any way, shape, or form.

It's like asking a girl out. The Cubs have asked, and asked, and asked and been rejected. I guess eventually one will finally do it and commit but in the mean time, we will just have to stay at home with a moist towel instead. :cum:

You dont offer 135 million unless you plan on spending it..

Its up to the other person if they want it or not

True. But like I said, it means nothing until someone actually accepts.

If you want to make Chicago appear more of a sexy destination, you either have to have a good team (which they don't yet), or show someone that you can actually land a big fish to entice others to follow which they haven't yet either.

Everything else is just talk, and I view talk as being cheap. Just my two cents though.

It means something cause their offering the money..

it shows their willing to spend that money accepted or not

Now about not being sexy enough is a different story and i agree with you...

Their problem right now, unless they grossly over spend
their going to have a hard time convincing these top FA to come until these kids show their for real..

If im a FA, all offer being somewhat equal im taking my talent to a team that playoff ready now..

They would be better off letting Baez, Bryant and Soler develop this year. If they take off then be willing to trade for a play off run.

I do not see then being an attractive landing spot until they are a .500 team or better. Maddon makes it more interesting but that is not enough. They have to have the "core" proven first then players will want to be a part of it. VS signing up and the core fails and they are stuck on a loser.

A comment by kaplan does not show commitment by the team
