They would be better off letting Baez, Bryant and Soler develop this year. If they take off then be willing to trade for a play off run.

I do not see then being an attractive landing spot until they are a .500 team or better. Maddon makes it more interesting but that is not enough. They have to have the "core" proven first then players will want to be a part of it. VS signing up and the core fails and they are stuck on a loser.

If the Cubs offer the most money, why would he know want to come? He's already got a title so nothing left to prove. If he's the #1 guy on an eventual Cubs WS team, his name will live forever. Plus it's Chicago which is a pretty nice city.

Why anyone would want to live in fucking St. Louis is beyond me. What a shithole.

Frankly, if you think that you possibly might fail, then how would you be stuck on a loser? If the prospects fail, the FO and developmental department have failed.

If nothing else, you have some pitching, and a team like the Royals proved that you don't have to have elite hitters to do some damage.

The Cubs can still go through growing pains even if they overpay Lester. What's the difference if you are saddled with a contract like that and he goes through TJ surgery, or you have prospects underperforming?

They already have two proven guys on the diamond. Surely you would think that a couple others would be serviceable or better.

You keep improving your record if you can, and then you start to see areas that may need to be addressed.

To simply wait for the opportune time to strike in free agency is fools gold because their isn't any, especially when it comes to pitching.

What's the difference if they have to beat out Boston and the Giants now, or the Yankees next year? I'd roll the dice with this year as being the best to land one, and take my chances next year finding the other.

its making an offer that you know will get beat (sanchez) but the public thinks you are trying.

Sanchez used the cubs to get the tigers to up the Ante then jumped on it, he didn't give the cubs a chance to respond because he didn't want to sign with them..

Sorry but 23 mil per is far from being a "hey we tried " offer..
no we dont know if it will get beat..
I personally think the cubs may need a 7th yr to get him but i doubt they will offer that. .

Then I would plug at least Tanaka money including the posting fee at Lester and take my chances that the Cubs will be competing when he is 31 or 32. If they don't think that, then they shouldn't even waste their time or efforts.

There is no reason that the Cubs should get outbid by the Giants or Red Sox. None!

Not with the flexibility that they now have. That is nothing more than Soriano and Shark combined annually who are no longer on the team, and with the whole holdover money that they didn't spend last year......well.

Now if Lester holds true to his word and suggests that it isn't about the money and the Cubs lose out, then so be it.

So as of today the cubs are the highest offer he has on the table with the giants and Cardinals left for him to talk too..

And you dont think their offer is serious enough and they should take it closer to 30 per now ?

That would be exactly like hendry did with Soriano and outbid himself. ..

Do we even know what the offers are other than speculation? I don't know any confirmed, especially when they say "north of" or between "this amount".

And guess who became a Cub when they wanted to land him to compete for a WS run?

That's why the price tag is near 150 million. The others would be north of 200 million and some closer to 300 million.

You said Hendry outbid himself. I am telling you I don't care. He landed who he wanted (Soriano, the highest targeted free agent that year) which is the bottom line and nothing else matters at that point.

Finishing second accomplishes nothing. Never has, never will.

Great. . Hendry finished first and second
Lol

if offer goes to 6/150 the cubs would have to go close to 170 or more to get him.. at that point id rather they offer a 7th yr instead or say no thanks and move on.

Of course it matters. You bid what you can afford and you also have to extrapolate that out for the life of the contract. That was a terrible signing and they outbid the second highest bidder in both years and dollars which made a halfway decent player untradeable when it was necessary to move on and get younger. All bidding against yourself accomplishes is raising the market in future years and hamstringing yourself from improving your club. Also if you backload a contract you either a) have to win a World Series in the part of the deal or b)know that you'll have younger, cheaper under market players to offset the overpay. Hendry accomplished neither with Soriano.

I'm getting the feeling that maybe the Cubs offer is high and that Lester is begging any contending team to please come close.

Lol..

Im sure Lester would prefer to pitch for someone who has a legit chance to win now, which is why I dont think the cubs will get him if a team like Boston or SF goes to 6/140 or so unless the cubs respond back with something crazy or that 7th year. .

Id love to have Lester but anything over 25 per would be nuts unless the cubs were in position to win now, which their not..
