Phil Collins never wanted to sing, he just wanted to bang on his drums.

should have stayed that way......Collins sold his soul to Disney.....He certainly helped Genesis to some commercial success, but after he left he just started cashing paychecks and gave up any musical integrity he had....

Really?!?

I worked at a Kid Rock show a couple of years after he blew up. The entire performance was dubbed. Seriously, no effort...the guitars on stage were not even plugged in.

I cannot say for sure if that was a one off thing or a regular thing or if it is still even a thing, but I can say without a doubt that night was a dubbed show.

You do that for television...not for thousands of peeps that paid for a live performance.

Individual shows....while Kid Rock had some issues, he could put on an amazing show when he wanted to.

I saw him in a small venue in South Beach Florida. He played a long set where he went around and, without skipping a beat, played every instrument on stage and brought down the house.....

Again individual performances can vary, but that particular night he was on absolute fire.

I would toss Bob Dylan, Elton John, Billy Joel into that mix as well. Also, John Williams is still alive, a definite nod to him. Paul Simon too.

I guess. To each their own.

Bad first impression I suppose...I just am pretty surprised that Kid Rock tops your list of live performances.

I will agree with you about Phil Collins. Genesis was probably never going to be great once Peter Gabriel took off, but Phil Collins taking the lead made that band the musical version of eating plain saltines for dessert.

I guess it was the intimacy of the performance.....that has a lot to do with it. This was after Kid Rock cleaned up his life a bit....about 4 years ago I think....

Performances will vary by musician to a degree. Genesis was more meaningful with Gabriel at the helm....Selling England by the Pound by far is my favorite album, but Collins and Genesis put out some good tracks from Duke, A Trick of the Tail, and Genesis(self titled album). Collins is entertaining in concert as well.

I like a lot of groups in concert more so than their music......there are talented people who can play technically well and put on a great show. Kid Rock is the most entertaining concert I have seen and I don't like his music. However, it needs to go beyond a concert performance. McCartney has brought absolutely nothing to the table musically, never innovated, never pushed the envelope, never even copied people who pushed the envelope....after the Beatles he is barely an afterthought in the music world......he owes everything to Lennon.

I don’t agree but that’s fine. And I think the vast majority of people would disagree. His catalog speaks for itself.

Even if we stay contained to pop acts during that time period, certainly Brian Wilson was doing more interesting things.

Just to throw more names into the discussion, consider

Roger Waters
David Gilmour (because of multiple genres)
Jeff Lynn
Pete Townsend
Freddie Mercury
Robert Smith(most wont agree, but was a pioneer)

As I said...I don't like the music...I appreciated the performance....two different things
