Poles sucks at drafting. He has wasted every 3rd and 4th round pick since he's been here.

3rd round
Velus Jones (not on team after 2 seasons)
Zach Pickens (no production)
Kirwan Amedgaje (far from being a starter)

4th round
Roschon Johnson (mid at best)
Tyler Scott (can't see the field)
Tory Taylor (avg punter taken too high)
Keenan Allen (1 year rental for $22 mil)

5th round
Braxton Jones (low end starter)
Dominique Robinson (scrub)
Noah Sewell (depth at best)
Terrell Smith (depth with some potential)
Austin Booker (depth)
Ryan Bates (can't see the field)

6-7th rounds
Only 2 are on the roster, including players that were traded for with 6th round picks.

In terms of finding starters, out of 19 picks, Poles found 2 including a punter. Without the punter, Poles is hitting on 5% of his mid to late round picks. For comparison, Pace in his first 3 seasons found 4 starters out of 14 picks giving him a 28% success rate. Jerry Angelo in his first 3 seasons found 5 including a perennial all-pro out of 21 for a 23% rate. The only recent GM with as bad of a rate on late round picks is Phil Emery, who also hit on only 2 mid/late round picks which also happen to be a low end starting LT in Charles Leno and punter in Pat O'Donnell. Emery's hit rate is 2 out of 14, since he had less picks to work with he wound up with 7% if you don't count the punter.

For real, Poles is one of the worst of the recent Bears GMs at drafting.
Too early. The mccaskeys and their favored media members play a game of musical chairs of blame to make sure that no one ever really zeroes in on the mccaskeys.

Last year it was fields. The hope, I believe, was that Eberflus could last through the end of next year. That’s critical, because it allows everyone else to get past the honeymoon phase.

What the mccaskeys can’t have is everyone being so new that you have to blame a guy who is brand new at his job. Because part of what they do when they fire someone is have their media people yell “hey he’s new, he’s different. You can’t say he’s like Jerry Angelo he just got here!”

They had to fire eberflus earlier than they want to. Now, if you fire poles, you’d have a new GM, new head coach and a QB in his second year.

That means that if the team isn’t even as good next year as everyone but me and like 3 other fans thought they’d be this year, here are your choices for whose fault everything is is

Kevin Warren

Caleb Williams in year 2? Even for a Williams detractor like me that’s a stretch.

The mccaskeys

Right now, you’ll get a few callers here or there demanding they sell the team. And you’ll have your David Haugh blame ownership in the first half of a sentence before ever so slightly making it about Poles in the second half of his sentence.

So, firing Poles doesn’t work. You could have entire segments of callers demanding they sell the team. This could lead to some hosts feeling emboldened to not care about access and agree with those callers.

He’s become the new guy where everything would be roses but for him, in a franchise where that’s been true for a couple seasons since Jim finks left. But he has to be retained to give other scapegoats time to mature.

The mccaskeys are probably hoping to eke out a couple 8-9 seasons. Then you can fire poles, Warren will be years in, Williams will be 3 years in and the HC will be two years in… plenty of shiny blame toys to keep eyes off of the mccaskeys

Because where a GM really shows their drafting acumen is in the middle rounds.

Hitting on 1st round picks, and to a lesser extent-2nd round picks, is expected. It's not to be celebrated.
Well I can tell you the Bears GMs consistently miss those picks!

Look at the Lions they nailed their first round picks with elite players.

I think looking at latter rounds is dumb how about just the total draft. I think in that view, Poles still sucks.

Very few franchises in the NFL can do what the Bears continually do.

Downgrading each coaching and GM position with someone worse. Goes to show just how inept George is. Not a drop of blood in his body knows ANYTHING about running an NFL franchise.
I still remember the video of George w his Bears stuff on practically running through the airport trying to pick up Poles like he was hoping to meet him in the bathroom or something.

I think another factor there though is where you are picking. Like back in the day the Bears rarely had a top 5 or 10 pick. I remember when they did, they blew it on Benson, but he was still a player. Of late, it seems like the Bears consistently have great picks. So if you suck, you get minimally serviceable players, but you should be getting superstars.
I remember when the Benson pick was announced. I yelled "NO!" in the middle of a bar.
Part of the low picks with Angelo was that he liked to trade down. Angelo's success was that he was able to draft 2 perennial pro bowlers and potential HoFers in his third year. So even though his hit rate wasn't high, he got some really good players on his hits.

This lacks context. Only 4.9% of 6th rounders and 4.2% of 7th rounders are starters in the NFL so the fact that Poles hasnt found a starter in one of those rounds isnt all that suprising

Also the comparison to Pace misses the mark as Pace's issue was blowing 1st and 2nd round picks and the reality is given 47.5% of all starters are drafted rounds 1 and 2, it is more important for a GM to hit on those picks.

Super Bowls are lost in the first 2 rounds.
Super Bowls are won in rounds 3-7

If you only find 2 starters each draft, it's a long rebuild especially if they are mid starters.
If you don't find depth, your team is just a few injuries from being out of playoff contention.
We have no depth on this team, and headed to another year of a rebuild because Poles is a shitty drafter in the mid-late rounds.
Imagine what this team would be like if 52.5% of our picks from 3-7 wound up being starters.

Dont worry in a couple years those picks will look dumb as ****. Coulda had Jalen Carter and still taken gibbs at 19, or taken Jaxon Smith Njigba.

A running back and a linebacker who cant pass defend is not "nailing it". Gibbs is a great talent but you could have just gone out and signed jacobs or saquan in FA. Gibbs already makes top 10 in guaranteed money for a RB because of his draft slot.

You spend first round picks on DE's,LT's,WR's,QB's,CB's,etc because of how much they get paid and the cheap control for 5 years.

Campbell is one of the worst linebackers in the NFL against the pass, he makes tremaine edmunds look like brian urlacher in pass coverage.

The fact that all of his 1st/2nd round picks are at minimum solid starters is actually pretty impressive. Some may develop into great players too, still way too early to judge.

Like you said, 50% of1st/2nd rounders are crap. Its essentially a coin flip. Stevenson is looking like the worst of poles picks thus far in those rounds but the heavy majority of NFL teams would still have him as a starter due to his talent/upside.

Poles got extremely fortunate in the Carolina trade that it bought him favor, because his track record to that point was garbage. If either #1 Bryce Young had turned out to be a franchise QB for Carolina, it would have been devastating for Poles or #2 Carolina does not end up with a top 3 pick and Poles is left rolling with a JJ McCarthy or similar QB with the dearth of talent around the rest of this roster. If either of those had happened, Poles would not even be in the discussion for being retained this year. Caleb is the only thing keeping him hanging on by the skin of his teeth but the rest of his roster is about to rub out that remaining hope in Caleb and so we might still see Poles gone this offseason.

Few if any teams have 52.5% of starters drafted by them in rounds 3-7. The data I sent is of all starters and the round they were drafted in. So it includes FAs and trades.

So for example Andrew Billings who we signed as a FA would count as a 4th round starter.

I meant imagine if 52.5 percent of Poles picks from 3-7 wound up being starting caliber, not that half of our starters coming from rounds 3-7. We'd have a better team if any of Poles picks from 3-7 aside from Jones were starting caliber, but they are not.

The goal isn't to be average or have the same hit rate as other teams. The goal is to be better. In the end, only one team wins the Super Bowl each year.

Coming into this season Poles was being celebrated for most of his moves, more of the hype nonsense a lot of us bought into. With this season being a disaster of epic proportions the moves many thought were good moves have turned into shit. Even the Sweat move which was celebrated has turned, the guy has played nowhere near the level he did last year.

We still have a young QB with talent and some good roster pieces, very good draft capital, loads of cap space, and a clean slate to hire a new coaching staff. This next offseason is make or break time for this franchise, we either turn the corner or sink even further to the bottom. I can’t say I have any faith In the trio of McCrapsky, Warrdumb, and the Pole smoker to do the right thing but it was clear Poles is going nowhere.

Why can’t Bears fans ever have anything but suck

Well, you gotta go back 18 years to Devin Hester for that. And if you're not into a special teams guy being a superstar, you go 24 years to Urlacher. Unless you want to call Jaylon Johnson a superstar. Maybe Forte. Honestly its been pretty sad since Angelo. Only excuse is using 2 firsts on Cutler, Mack and Fields.

Well obviously they haven’t done it.

Just saying good teams find stars regardless of where they are drafting.

Briggs and Tillman were picked after Urlacher and before Hester

He paid Tremaine Edmunds a ton of money to absolutely suck in coverage.

Too many whiffs for Poles to stay.
