I think he is terrible at characters and pretty good at story in the sense that each film I cannot possibly predict who lives, who dies, and where it ends up. Along with using gifts of gab to build tension and break open inciting action, his ability to remain unpredictable after the "dam breaks" is also pretty impressive to me.
I do agree he is middling and not deserving of his high status certainly not among the true masters.
Also, I am not trying to talk you out of it or fight you. Just providing food for thought that you can do with as you wish.

That's why I liked Jackie Brown, because the characters were actually good, and better fleshed out than most of his other work. I'm not a fan of homage film making. I find it sophomoric, and tedious.
