Wasn’t it Rapaport who also reported a few days ago that Phillips was doing a bunch of legwork on potential coaching replacements for Fox? Seems to me that was met here with much skepticism. So now, is that looking more likely to be true, or is Rapaport just a sometimes-right hack in the eyes of some people here?

yeah it was rapaport...and then it was bernstein corroborating the report saying all teddy was doing was his job as team president and following league mandated protocol.

rapaport is just as plugged in as anybody and reports what he hears, which he did in these 2 unrelated cases.

For what? He really hasn’t done much wrong.

Most people are on-board with Trubisky. They were cool with letting Cutler go. He got the steal of the past few drafts in Jordan Howard. He got Tarik Cohen, Leonard Floyd, Akiem Hicks, etc. Even his missteps were pre-tempered with reasonable outs (being easily able to get out of bad free agent signings like Glennon)

Huge fan of this move if it happens. You have to do this in order to project stability and attract the best head coaching candidate available to groom Trubisky.

The only condition in my mind is the Bears have to realize this is just a symbolic extension. Pace may be a great GM but he has not proven it so far.

Even with this extension, they have to be willing to eat Pace's new money and the new head coaches if things go south next year.

Don't think there is any way that happens but they can't hide behind what they will be locked into paying these guys.

Are you seriously that daft that you don't realize that Fox wasn't on him.

Does the name Akiem Hicks mean anything to you?

He could and probably should have fired Fox after a disastrous 2016. At this point I don’t care about that or the narrative that Fox was forced on Pace in 2015. Time to move on.

In the podcast today he stated that all Ted was doing was calling about the openings. People misinterpreted it and he cleared it up this morning. Ted has 0 say in the coaching hire.

I don't listen to techno so that reference is lost on me. And yes he didn't hire Fox but he could have fired him last offseason. Akiem Hicks isn't a pass rusher, idiot.

As the shoopster has said here elsewhere, if Pace takes the podium alone on Black Monday to deal with the HC situation, then you may be right (even though there's no proof of what you are so unequivocally if not hopefully stating). If the Sweatster's there, beware.

There's nothing to suggest Phillips will get out of the way on the HC hire. The next time will be the first. Not sure why so many CCSers are so insistent that he will, even as they insist he did not when the Bears hired John Fox. Have your cake and eat it too much, guys?

Reports are reports. The Bears' actions speak louder than a "report's" words. The actions are that Phillips has always been involved and - as the Pacemakers insist on reminding us in order to absolve him of blame - actually picked the last HC with "King" George and "Uncle" Ernie Accorsi.

How can you tell I type weird, are you nearby watching me? . .

.@RapSheet told 670 The Score that he expects #Bears GM Ryan Pace to get a contract extension to match the new coach's deal.

When you and I were debating the desirability of the Bears job, I told you that the Bears should extend Pace to match the deal the new coach receives. It’s a simple and smart business decision. Of course your contentions were the Bears would not be able even get interviews with some top candidates and the Bengals, Giants, Colts and Bucs were all better landing spots. You also mentioned Pace’s deal would limit their ability to get a top guy. You might want to stick to selecting every draft eligible player in one mock off-season or another.

Good, then we can proceed!

I'm OK with Pace staying at the alternatives are likely worse. I like his drafts and hope they continue to improve. I hope he gets a clue with the other aspects of the job. I wish him all the best with the coaching hire and the awkward press conference he has coming up.

You might want to check around the league regarding free agent hits and misses. Hub was discussing Pace’s FA record on the post game Sunday. He said it’s much better than some perceive and that you rarely get guys like Hicks that way. He also mentioned that he’s never damaged the cap while trying to fill holes in free agency.

Our roster talent following Angelo and Emery was abysmal. They started the rebuild late and Emery/Trestman set the timeline back.

You can’t fill every level of the roster in a couple years via FA. Desperation signings would be far worse than what Pace did in measuring and offsetting his risk.

I’m not applauding his FA record but I understand what he was doing.

Go ahead and find me an organization that doesn't have multiple top level managers on the stage during a presser when the head coach is fired.

Good to see the Pacemakers have their excuses in order already . . .

I like Pace. Just not the rest of the bears upper management.

but I respect a guy like Ballard more who told the McCaskey's how it really is regardless if it hurt their feelings.

A lot of good that respect does him or the Bears.
Better to find someone who will go along to get along and then ease the McCaskey's into modern football. Angelo seemingly got them to realize they need a QB and experience with that QB got them to realize you need to put an offense around him. Hopefully Pace got them to not be afraid to draft a QB and will get them to realize it's no longer the 1940s, the game has changed.

Either the McCaskey's sell the team which isn't going to happen any time soon or we get people running the team who are willing to do a little of what they want and a lot of bringing the organization into the modern era.
The tough guy GM candidates may get your respect but they don't help us, McCaskey's will be able to find a yes man for the spot.

Aren't the drafted rookie contracts pretty much set in stone now and only the timing of the signing bonus up for negotiation?
That's correct. The last Collective Bargaining Agreement started the rookie contract limits. Rap was referring to Dalton's contract and how bad it is now.
