I never post in this thread but it if saves someone a couple hours of their life then it’s worth it. This might be the worst movie I’ve ever seen.
It's funny you mentioned fast forwarding for this -- I almost did that like 15-20 minutes in, but I didn't. That opening scene and those initial minutes are quite rough, especially with Julia Roberts, who I never liked from an acting standpoint. The writing also is kind of pretentious in that opening scene (the whole "I fucking hate people" thing, etc.).

I went into this movie already hating it (2 and a half hours long, why?), almost turned it off and/or fast-forwarded, but it did keep my interest until the end. Overall, I certainly didn't hate it and I'd disagree that it's the worst movie I ever saw. It was okay at best, if not blah. I say that because, there are elements that I was still thinking about -- as far as their meaning goes -- even after I saw the movie. Anytime a movie can stick with you like that, they did something kind of right, in my opinion.

Some things are just so blatant. Hawke is a Media Studies teacher. One theme is how many things, including the media, pits people against each other -- a pretty unoriginal theme. Maybe I'm wrong, but "the Huxleys" was a nod to Aldous Huxley, who wrote Brave New World, which shares some themes with the movie (haven't read that in ages, but if I remember correctly).

Like every streaming movie these days, this movie shares the same problems that a movie like "Don't Look Up" has. It tries to throw in too many themes and say too much; and much of what it's trying to say, has already been said ad nauseum. Overall, I'd say Don't Look Up was a much shittier movie than this, so it's got that going on for it, lol.

I'm laughing with you by the way, not at you.

I liked this movie a little better simply because I felt it was a little more subtle with its themes. I also liked the whole idea of renting a place, and the main owners coming back, and what you'd do in that scenario. It was a bit Hitchcockian.

The premise was decent. The pacing was just glacial.

Also Julia Roberts character was obnoxious

I thought Rebel Moon was awful. I enjoyed Leave the World Behind, but I’m used to Sam Esmail’s directing style from his previous tv show.

A buddy of mine reviewed that movie and tore it apart. Also Don't Look Up sucked hard.

Ah damn. I thought he had a site for his reviews, but it's just on his personal Facebook, would feel weird sharing that.

I'll ask him and see what he says.

Yeah I'd say our opinions are pretty much aligned, although he seems to dislike more than me. I'm a little more forgiving, but I agree, it's your typical unoriginal streaming movie that's blah at best if not sucks outright.

Barbie was solid.
I had a real hard-on for oppenheimer because i love the history of the manhattan project. After rewatching it, the movie is pretty much shit

The wife & I did our own Barbenheimer NYE and these were my findings as well.

Barbie was genuinely entertaining, funny and clever. Maybe a little too "heady" in the third act, but considering the source material....it's a home run.

Oppenheimer was a drag. Murphy & Downing Jr were both solid, but I have come to realize Christopher Nolan is pretty lame when he is not carried by one of his brother's scripts.
