Cubs have given Rizzo a 7 year deal with two club options at the end of the deal. It buys out all of the arbitration years plus one year of free agency. The two club options mean that as many as three years of free agency could be taken care of at this point. Cubs follow the the trend around baseball of anyone showing any promise getting locked up before hitting free agency.

Smart move, imo. As he and Castro mature, they'll be nice pieces around a power hitter.

There is no no trade protection in the deal as well.

41M isn't much, especially if he develops into the power hitter we all know he can be (and is performing as right now).

So we have Castro and Rizzo locked up, plus Soler long term. Time to lock up Samardzija.

What are your thought salami?

I do like the fact that they are making a committment long term to him. It's a step in the right direction for once. I am not convinced to this point that he's the answer at first base. They appear to have given him a deal that won't "break the budget". Imagine that.

I will reserve my opinion, as I have said many other times, on Rizzo, until he has the opportunity to play an entire ML season.

Given all the shitty deals Boy Blunder has a habit of accomplishing. This one may just pan out for him enough to keep the ******** marathon,of all things Theo,at full steam.

You are right, $41M isn't much. The only risk to the deal is if he fails to develop into at least a near All Star caliber 1B, then the Cubs would be wasting a premier offensive position on a average at best player.

But $41M isn't much for 7 years. That averages to less than $6M a year or I guess about $10M a year if he hits all his incentives.

$6-10M a year isn't enough to lose the cheap tag yet.

Love this tweet...

@BillPlaschke

Leave it to the Cubs to make news -- signing Rizzo -- during the middle of a nationally televised White Sox game..

haha it's so true, I love the move, doesn't break the bank, plus if he pans out like it seems he will this is a steal at a premier position.
