lmao yet counsell got shut out of the playoffs this year as well. meanwhile, the team he left actually had a better record this year without counsell

and again, make all the excuses about injuries and performance you like. ross dealt with those as well. also, isnt it the managers job to put the players in the best position for success? so, if you opining that counsell got less performance out of the same roster....welll....who does that fall on? Probably blame Ross for that too, dont you?! lol
If you think the manager controls whether Gomes or Hendricks get old enough to stop being MLB caliber players, you may put too high of a value on managers.

It's actually pretty simple. This roster was worse this year because no Cy Young campaign from Steele, no MVP caliber campaign from Bellinger, and lots of role players got significantly worse (Gomes, Hendricks, Merriweather, Alzolay). Also, the playoff landscape was far more challenging this year. Beating the Atlanta Braves for a wild card spot is a bit different than beating the Miami Marlins.

Hell, the Arizona Diamondbacks were a significantly better team this year than last year. And are they in the playoffs? Don't see them in here...

yeah, the backup catcher is at fault for Counsell's woes

:what:

Amaya got 131 at bats last year, compared to Gomes 382.

Gomes became the backup catcher and then a released player thanks to his .421 OPS. Bless your heart lol.

yeah and ignore getting Shota and his Cy young contending campaign

you seem to think that these players were only good in 2023 and then all sucked in 2024

poor Counsell

facts are facts...cubs record didnt change and the brewers record improved without counsell

get over it

Shota is a bit better than Stroman looking at the numbers for sure. That's one improvement. Compared to the dozen or so fall offs? And yet still the same record? You're making my point, not yours.

My take is responding to the nonsense that Ross to Counsell is somehow a downgrade. Why isn't Ross employed? Lots of other teams wanted Counsell. Do you know more than the MLB collectively?

2024 Cubs starters

C - Miguel Amaya 2023 0.2 WAR - this year 1.8 WAR with similar OPS+ 90 vs 82
1B - Michael Busch - certainly an upgrade over last years DFQ marathon of first basemen (busch 2.8 WAR OPS + 118)
2B - Nico Hoerner - 2023 OPS+ 102 2024 OPS+ 101
3B - Paredes/Wisdom comps the same with Morel/Wisdom
SS - Dansby Swanson - 2023 OPS+ 104 vs 2024 OPS+ 98
OF - Ian Happ - 2023 OPS+ 118 vs 2024 OPS+ 120
OF - PCA - wasnt there in 2023 but delivered a 2.4 WAR for the Cubs this year
OF - Seiya Suzuki - 2023 OPS+ 130 vs 2024 OPS+ 138
DH - Cody Bellinger - 2023 OPS+ 139 vs 2024 OPS+ 111

so hitting wise, only cody had a drastic drop off in production. the additions of Busch and PCA helped off set that, however

need we do the pitching next still?

imagine thinking that a team with the same record back to back years would have some crazy massive regressions as @EberflusBeardBears would lead you to believe

Bottomline.....Counsel didn't do anything wrong but he also didn't do anything Ross couldn't have done. For $40million dollers, he needed to be a savior. At least that's what the Cubs dufus GM was counting on.

There is only once place you have to look for the answer. It has nothing to do with their erractic bats, starters or defense. The bullpen blew something like 25 or 30 games by the 4th of July.

Game over.

As of July 1, 2024, the Chicago Cubs had blown 17 saves, which led to a comment on Twitter that the Cubs bullpen might be the worst in the author's lifetime.

That is why the Cubs aren't in the playoffs.

The bullpen can blow leads without it involving saves. Games blown was higher than 17....don't remember the exact number.
