Brandon McCarthy on the radar:

Brandon McCarthy has drawn immediate interest from numerous teams including the Cubs, White Sox and Blue Jays. McCarthy was impressive when healthy but missed significant time thanks to shoulder issues and the scary line drive incident in early September.

#Cubs activate Garza, Stewart and Vizcaino from 60 day DL. Roster now at 36

They have less than three weeks to pare it down to protect all the guys they want in advance of Rule 5.

Yeah it seems like Villanueva and maybe Struck are the only guys that are going to get protected.

If there's an open spot, Struck will be protected I would assume. As I'm confident Struck will be picked up in the Rule V draft.

Also. who thinks Stewart will be non-tender and sign for a little cheaper? I would say yes and have to compete for a roster spot in spring training. Well, that's what I would try at least.

I think they have to gauge how likely it is that Ian Stewart will bail if he's non-tendered. I doubt he gets a lot of offers elsewhere. So the Cubs are probably safe not offering arb.

MLBTR's offseason calendar:

November 7th - 9th - GM Meetings
November 20th - Deadline for setting 40-man roster in advance of Rule 5 Draft
November 30th - Deadline for teams to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players
December 3rd - 6th - Winter Meetings
December 6th - Rule 5 Draft takes place at Winter Meetings
January - Teams, players exchange arbitration figures
February - Arbitration hearings take place

So we'll find out by the end of the month. They would expose him to waivers if he's taken off the 40-man though and someone might snatch him up just because.

Yeah McCarthy is definitely on the list of guys that is likely to fit the mold of what the Cubs want to do this offseason. He is probably the guy coming off the best season that the Cubs will target.

yeah he kinda fits both sides. he can be a good fit for all. I would be happy because that means its 100% that floyd is dealt and that hahn really likes pitching. we need to have it so we dont have to be starting santiago, quintana, axeface, stults etc because of no depth at SP.

The cubs need to fill out their SP roster for sure as no one is ready yet for the mlb.

injuries and what not make it scary for both sides of town.

Well for this side of town the biggest question is how much are other teams going to be scared off by that injury history because he really does fit for all teams. The wildcard is if he is going to take a discount to stay with the A's, who just resigned Colon. I could see the market on McCarthy being bigger than most are predicting and the Cubs dropping up because he no longer is a value signing.

Thats the problem. Chicago (both sides) would love to have him if its at a bargain or atleast incentive laden. if there are other teams like new york who are really hurting for pitching or bos I can see him getting an over market deal. Im not sure I go more than 2 years for either side. he would help us win now and if he is good for the cubs, trade for specs.

There is of course the "everybody wins" scenario in which the Cubs sign him then deal him at the deadline to the White Sox for specs...

Saw that coming from miles away.

We may not be able to get greinke but I think we can get mccarthy in a trade with specs.

i heard that mccarthy is a real jag off though....one of the reasons the sox traded him to tex...not sure if it was because of ozzie or not.
