First of all, James Russell is not a player that has much, if any, trade value. He'd be nothing more than a couple packets of Splenda in the Padres coffee.

However, anyone who says he was a bad reliever is either only remembering his SP outings, stopped watching the Cubs half-way through the season, or does not know how to look up splits.

Granted, it is a very small sample size but Russell was quite good as a reliever last season.

That said. He's still bleh as a trade chip.

My favorite teams

  1. Minnesota United FC
  1. Chicago Bulls
  1. Chicago Bears
  1. Chicago Blackhawks
  1. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Anyone else remember when Jon Garland looked like Cy Young in Petco?

Or we are also choosing to remember his sub standard 2010 as well and factoring that in?

Russell had issues keeping the ball in the yard no matter if he was a starter or a reliever. He's an average at best MRP and frankly I think he's pretty shitty. He just happened to put together a decent season as a reliever last season....while getting shit all over as a starter.

In the end though, as you said Randy Wells and James Russell =/= to Anthony Rizzo in a trade.

CO: Hey, I hear Anthony Rizzo is on the trading block.

San Diego FO: Yep. Why?

CO: Well I was wondering if you'd be interested in a 29 year old starting pitcher who has gotten worse over the last two seasons and a lefty middle RP with very few appearances who was awful as a starter last season so he has no versatility in exchange for Rizzo.

SDFO: Is this a :troll: attempt?

CO: No

SDFO: :obama:

Ya, that's definitely true but I was specifically looking at his recovery last year as a RP.

I'd tend to agree with you that 2011 was more of an anomaly than anything.

I think this conversation has run its course

I set up a new Garza thread with the latest MLBTR blurb.
