See, how it works is, not every prospect pans out. So the idea is that you protect against this by adding as many prospects as possible. Also, by adding prospects, you have people to replace guys who are traded for pitching.

Besides, this guys skill set is somewhat unusual. You don't see a lot of guys like him that also have a RF arm.

True. It is to be looked at as inventory IF it comes to fruition.

Looks like we're considered to still be in the running...

"One of a half-dozen teams -- the Red Sox, Tigers, Phillies, Cubs, Yankees and Mariners -- who all worked out Castillo privately -- is expected to win the services of the compact and powerful Castillo who is generally viewed as an outfielder by most but is apparently being considered as a possible second baseman by the Yankees."

Rusney Castillo Rumors: Tuesday

By Jeff Todd [August 19, 2014 at 2:05pm CDT]

There has been a lot of chatter regarding 27-year-old Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo. (Read here for some reactions to his well-attended recent workout, which seems to have increased his standing quite a bit around the league.) We’ll keep tabs on the latest right here:

•Bidding is strong, and could well reach or even exceed the $55MM level, according to a tweet from Sahadev Sharma of Baseball Prospectus. The Cubs appear not to be interested at that level, he adds.

first I want to say that I don't care one way or other if cubs get this guy or not..

yes he seems like a good player and be cool to get him but I don't know he just doesn't give me that yea we gotta get this guy feel..

he hasn't played since 2012 and didn't put up great numbers..
being just 5'9 180 pounds, he seems to be someone you just hope ends up being a scrappy little leadoff hitter who can hopefully get on base at a good clip and steal bases

with sharma thinking 55 mil is out of Cubs range, I would have to disagree with that because it was already known he'd be in the 10+ mil per range to get him before they started workouts with him.. so, why would cubs do a private workout if they weren't willing to spend to get him and they mustve made a decent offer if their still 1 of 4 teams still interested if its true that 2 of the remaining 6 dropped out because of the cost ..

hopefully we get an answer on him this week, be interesting to see what they do with Alcantara and or Baez position wise if they do get him..
his size is for CF, so wondering if they have Baez finish season at 3B or not and Alcantara at 2B

I agree... I'd like for them to pick him up, but he seems like a big enough of a risk and a small enough of a need where I won't be as disappointed as I was when we missed out on Tanaka.

LOL.. my thinking is this.. if money and years are somewhat equal I think he going to choose the team that he going to be able to start and play for right away
im guessing he would prefer staying at his position in CF, so lets see of teams interested who they have in CF

Yankees have Ellsbury in CF, they were said that they would use Castillo at 2B where they have Stephen Drew, Castillo wont replace Ellsbury, who knows if he would consider 2B.

Tigers
have Rajai Davis in CF, I doubt tigers will decide to play Castillo full time over Davis now

Red Sox have rookie Mookie Betts in CF, so this could be a possible destination for Castillo

phillies have a solid rookie in Ben Revere in CF, unless Phils are willing to move Revere to LF I don't see it here..

Mariners have Austin Jackson that they just acquired from tigers, don't see a match here if Castillo wants to start right away

Cubs have rookie Alcantara in CF now, yea we all want Alcantara to play and succeed but Castillo would be able to jump in and play CF right away here
ALcantara could always go back to 2B with Baez moving to 3B..

so, unless Castillo ok with not playing full time right away or is willing to play another position other then CF, I see the Red Sox and Cubs as his best landing spot of the 6 teams with money and years being to his liking..

As I said before I'm rather apathetic about it all. From the things I've read they don't know for certain he's even going to be MLB ready to start. So, i'm pretty meh. If it happens it happens.

there will be a surplus of over bidding for him due to the recent track records of guys coming out of cuba.

Considering a player can only sign with one team, there's always a surplus if more than one team us bidding.

I want him. He may not be a superstar but he projects as a high OBP type and a ML caliber leadoff hitter. If the Cubs land him that gives them some flexibility if some other prospects fail. Alcantara has been struggling since his first week and struggling may be a nice way of saying it. Almora and Schwarber are nothing close to guarantees and having Castillo in the fray could give the Cubs a OF next year of Bryant,Castillo, and Soler.

I mean $10-12 mil a year isn't a whole lot for a guy that should be a starting CF in the ML

If he's good it's not but $10-12 mil a year isn't peanuts. Granderson signed for $15 mil as a proven major league player who was an outfielder. Obviously not a CF but the point remains if you're paying someone that they have to be a starter and they have to be good or else it's a giant waste of money. Keep in mind someone who's got as some what similar profile in Rajai Davis got a 2 year $10 mil deal last off season. So paying this guy double that says you think he's going to be above average.

If the Cubs are willing to sign him for that price I would be happy. I am confident in their ability to evaluate talent and the Cubs could use a true leadoff type hitter moving forward

There has been a lot of chatter regarding 27-year-old Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo. (Read here for some reactions to his well-attended recent workout, which seems to have increased his standing quite a bit around the league.) We’ll keep tabs on the latest right here:

The Tigers, Red Sox, and Giants are still in the mix for Castillo, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Meanwhile, the Cubs, Yankees, and Phillies are not expected to place high bids for him.
Earlier Updates

Bidding is strong, and could well reach or even exceed the $55MM level, according to a tweet from Sahadev Sharma of Baseball Prospectus. The Cubs appear not to be interested at that level, he adds.
The Braves are “not in the bidding right now” for Castillo, tweets David O’Brien of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Atlanta has been noted as a possible suitor in the past.
Six clubs are seen as viable landing spots for Castillo at this time, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (echoing, in some cases, earlier reports): the Red Sox, Tigers, Phillies, Cubs, Yankees, and Mariners. Castillo could sign a deal as soon as the end of the week, Heyman adds. We’ve heard conflicting reports on Philadelphia’s interest, in particular, and one executive tells Heyman that he believes the team could be attempting to downplay its interest while working to ink Castillo.
