Well, here's the deal...what do you value more?

1. Whatever crap prospects the Dodgers are now going to give the Cubs due to lack of leverage;

2. One year of Dempster for $12.5MM;

3. The comp round pick.

If 2. and 3. are about equal then they have to present the qualifying offer. I'm of the opinion that the pick or Dempster for an extra year is worth more than whatever the Cubs would get back at this point. I guess it depends on how much a team is willing to give up for Shields or Greinke, but there ya go. At this point I think they're probably working on a Garza trade (that hasn't been leaked, herp a derp) and putting Dempster on the back burner.

Yeah I think Dempster is going to be a Cub and he will be here in 2013.

What do we need him for exactly? To get a spec? He's worthless he's gonna help us win 65 instead of 60 I would rather lose 5 more and watch him sit hurt or benched for being a dickhead then win those 5 games.

Then you're not making a good baseball decision.

The Cubs are at the mercy of Dempster's 10/5 rights and are doing what they can given those parameters. They cannot operate at all if he's on the DL.

I still say, I don't have any issue w/ Dempster utilizing his 10/5 rights...I have an issue w/ him saying he wants to do whatever will help the Cubs, then when the right deal presented himself, he dicked us over. **** that.

I'd boo if I were there tomorrow.

I've always seen him follow that "help the Cubs" statement with "what's best for me and my family" so while the result was annoying and frustrating, it was also not a surprise in retrospect. I think you can boo him all you want as long as he doesn't actually suck when he pitches :lol:

The Dodgers have a three-game set coming up against the NL West-leading Giants this weekend. Here's hoping the Giants sweep and the Dodgers get super-desperate again without trading for Greinke :woot:

Sad thing to all of this, I remember an angry outcry when Dempster had the nerve to exercise his option this past winter. I don't recall what side of the issue I found myself on, though I think I didn't like it. Dempster was a B rated SP, and would have brought back a Comp-B pick if the team offered arbitration, and I'm pretty sure I was hoping things would go that route. I wasn't upset he exercised his option, but I thought it would be an option that would come back to haunt the team. Little did I suspect it would turn out to be true out in this way.

According to the last Elias rankings on MLBTR Dempster was ranked A, but I guess it didn't matter.

A? After his dismal season last year? Hard to imagine. Then we would have gotten a better pick.

That was just a calculation but his 2008, 2009 and 2010 were good and I think the Elias formula uses ERA or some crap. Either way the calculation was dumb and I'm glad they ditched it. MLBTR has a blurb from a while back about how it's actually calculated but it's a moot point now. But I distinctly remember Dempster being an A and Ramirez and Pena were B. Rami was actually just below the A/B cutoff or else it would've been better for the Cubs this draft. Le sigh.

Dempster's next start should be on Tuesday (or Monday if Garza can't go and they want to keep him on the five day schedule) and that game is broadcast on WGN. It's also a night game. Basically if Dempster pitches that game, then the trade offers were probably pure crap.

idk if this was posted in here yet... to many posts to read through, but
•The Cubs offered to send Dempster to the Dodgers straight up for right-hander Allen Webster, but the Dodgers turned it down, writes Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. People briefed on the talks say the Dodgers have thus far offered a couple of lesser prospects who may project as relievers instead. It now seems that the Dodgers are more interested in Matt Garza than Dempster.

If the Rays don't deal Shields then perhaps the Dempster offer gets upped by the Dodgers because they do need an arm.
