Glad my son goes to a school that still isn't afraid to bring religion and National pride into the school. The concert honored Veterans, and the program last night was called America and featured the follow songs.

1. The Star-Spangled Banner
2. America the Beautiful
3. Battle Hymn of the Republic
4. God Bless the U.S.A
5. Proud of our Veterans
6. Military Medley (The armed forces fight songs from each branch, Vets stood up for their fight song)

What state do you live in?

A lot of states don't do the Pledge anymore.

That's cool, I really don't remember when Maryland stopped, (maybe 20 years ago) and Florida doesn't do it now either...not sure when they put an end to it.

NC still does.
They open each city council meeting with the pledge and a prayer here in western NC. Some woman and her husband tried to have it stopped...They wound up leaving town after all was said and done. The town here was in an uproar..Turned out, some ultra lefty doctor and his wife moved them in from Arizona for exactly that purpose. The doctors wife is a "Code Pinker" .

If people genuinely cared about "preserving America" they would be more upset by the plutocratic corporo-fascism that has entirely saturated society and government, and less worried about "libs" who want to remove slavish rituals like the POA and having religion in public life (where it does NOT belong).

It's true that this country is gradually moving away from irrational things like religion and patriotism and catching up with the rest of the civilized world generation by generation. Good thing.

We aren't becoming more civilized. We are just more efficient at whitewashing our inhumanity.

Question for mick

How can you be OK with people being fans of a sports team, but not be OK with people being fans of their own country?

The similarities are striking

A

Guy wears a Bears jersey
Attends Bear games
Sings the Bear fight song after every score
Screams for his team

B

Guy attends a civic minded function in an American themed shirt
Pledges loyalty to the country

A is cool

B is a kook??

I have no problem with people being fans of their country, what gets me is the way they're duped into doing it, and duped into accepting the toxic associations that come along with it.

For example, why does national pride always have to be centered around military worship? Is there anyone stood enough to believe that our military is used to protect our freedom? It's used to protect corporate interests in strategic parts of the world and manipulate regimes (overthrow or install and prop up) to suit that purpose.

I think national pride should be about celebrating nurses, teachers, writers, thinkers, emergency responders and volunteers. People who work to make life and society better at home.

What does the Bears being a business have to do with what I said? You're drawing an utterly illogical and inane analogy.

You mentioned corporate interests in your post..I merely asserted that the Bears are a business and a corporation as well, yet you support them
You still havent commented on my comparisons between supporting the Bears, and supporting America

I don't entirely disagree with you mick. I pray in my home and my house is based on faith in God and that's really where it should be, in the home. I don't want people outside my home teaching my family about faith and prayer unless in know thier basis and doctrine. If all religion is taken out of government and public facilities, Its really fine with me. Thw whole "as for me and my house" thing. I do think we should honor veterans who have served in some way and teach our kids to respect service members. I'm not sure if the pledge really does that or not.
