You miss the point. The problem isn't the pledge or patriotism. The problem is the people that still think the usa is the best at everything in the world when its not. Its actually not the best at anything at all except military might and making money. The problem is that the rest of the industrialized world is passing us by.
And when people point that out as evidence for needing to move forward, they are called anti-american for suggesting even for a second the USA isn't the holy grail of planet earth. They are accused of hating their country.
What mick is talking about is the difference between national pride and patriotic fundamentalism.
