The technology level makes sense. Estimating a civilizations level by it's ability to use it's local resources makes sense. As far as globalization, that assumption is made because of the level of resources required to actually harness the energy output of your local star.

I get where they are going with their theorizing, it is just a bit soon.... we just found the signal and have no solid proof it is from an intelligent source.... yet they are jumping ahead like "I BET THEY HAVE SPACE CARS!" lol

We already have aliens living among us. A Russian bureaucrat accidentally admitted it on camera before when he thought the camera wasn't recording anymore. People can bury their heads in the sand for all I care though.

Well Ancient Aliens barely even showed that recently. That footage was from back in like 2012 I think.

This thread is fun, I like the thought process of some on here. Can't be long until we are all looking at Aussies thread for ideas on how to survive. That and rewatching war of the worlds (the Cruise version because of the common cold)

:bowrofl:

I like how the dude has a scale that is used to determine the progress of a civilization’s technological development. How the hell do you even develop something like that? Hope they find something, that would be badass.

Hey, why not use a human-made scale based on the limitations of our own knowledge? It fits right in there with the common assumption that all life in the universe requires water or Earth-like conditions.

Not gonna lie... First thing I thought was that SETI must be low on funds.

While a cute sentiment, Watterson became a recluse, I don't think it's a good idea quoting someone who doesn't want much contact with his fellow human being.

Why not? Have you met people? They elected Clinton and Trump in the primary. Who in their right mind would want contact with that?

I haven't been out of my annex since 2010, I don't like people much.

I liked this part:

Well, that would require less energy and could indicate the presence of a Kardashev Type I civilization—meaning that it could be a highly technological, contemporary society that harnesses the solar energy emitted by its local star, much like our planet does with solar panels. This particular civilization’s social structure is theorized to be completely globalized and interconnected.

Lmao not only are you guessing at their supposed technology level but you are theorizing about their society on top of it.... pump the brakes

Imagine an entire civilization based on the Kardashians! A world filled with whinny fat assed attention whores. Is there some way we could avoid contact with these interstellar cunts?

SETI Signal

"We can’t claim the detection of an extraterrestrial civilization from this observation. What we can say is that the signal is interesting and merits further scrutiny."

"The possibility of noise of one form or another cannot be ruled out, and researchers in Paris led by Jean Schneider are considering the possible microlensing of a background source by HD164595."

So it's interesting but not proof of anything. The Transformers are not arriving anytime soon.

Well of course not, the signal isn't coming from Cybertron.

I'm going to take the part of a religious nut here for a second, please indulge if you would. Maybe God placed intelligent life very far apart for a reason, that reason is so his creations don't intermingle. Perhaps we are all judged on a different set of commandments.

Like when he made everyone speak a different language at the Tower of Babel so that humans would split up and go there different ways? That's been working out great lately.

We're taking billions and billions of miles apart, vast distances that cannot be covered.
