I am not trying to shut down the intellectual exercise.... I just think it is a bad idea to spew the theories forth as if we have found a confirmed alien civilization when we haven't yet.
If the article was just about theoretical alien civilizations and how we might go about estimating their technology levels and how we might estimate their society based on that information, fine.... no problem.... but when you have a possible signal with nothing confirmed and you throw out there theories about assumed alien civilizations and their technology level and then their society... I find it to be sensational and a bad tactic.
Sorry that is my opinion on it.... you guys are free to disagree with me, you know I won't begrudge you on it.

The theory exists irrespective of any individual signal. Again this would be like saying, hold off on theorizing the existence of a black hole until one is observed. That's just scientifically obtuse.
If there is ever a time in science to discuss a theory, and this may shock you apparently, it's usually when some observation is relevant to said theory. If there is an observation that suggests a black hole exists then guess what the theory on black holes will likely be discussed. If there is a signal observed that may be alien then guess what the theory regarding the type of alien civilizations will likely be discussed.
That's pretty much the most relevant time to discuss a theory.

I'm not the one publishing an article saying "I've discover proof of God, and he's a type B God due to the nature of my proof" just to come back and say "oops that was just a radio preacher"
I have no obligation to prove God. Only God can prove his own existence. And I believe he will some day for those that don't believe.

The article never claimed to have proof. In fact the headline in the article in the OP says, "Not a Drill: SETI Is Investigating a Possible Extraterrestrial Signal From Deep Space"
How did you arrive at them having proof when it clearly says they are investigating a possible signal? Do we need to go over what it means when someone says they are investigating a possibility?
