After the whole auto crisis and recall fiasco, Americans are very reluctant to buy from GM, Ford and Chrysler anymore but their vehicles are coming back. I'd put the new Chevy Impala up against any piece of shit Mid Size car that Toyota can make. The newer Ford Taurus is also nice, but I'm not much of a Ford guy. Just my opinion.

I do like Chevy's quite a bit. Fords suck.

When I was looking for a new vehicle in late 2011/early 2012 I looked at Ford and found nothing they made that I liked the look of, not even delving deeper into whether their reliability was bad/good or their prices were bad/good or if they had features I wanted... I was mainly looking at 4WD or AWD SUVs and I found none I liked the look of from Ford.

Maybe iz just me.... but Ford also has recent history of reliability issues so I was shying away anyways.

It depends on the specifics of the make and model. This old-fashioned sense of buying by brand or buying because something is made in one place over another is just out-dated. These cars are designed and built world-wide for the most part. Even if the model doesn't exist world-wide in the same name, it's likely the platform or the drivetrain is.

Test drive AT LEAST 4 vehicles that you like. Then you compare them by the components, see which is most reliable. Also, be wary of fanboys, the autosphere is the worst when it comes to fanboys. People that shout out stick with x-brand are a dead giveaway. Trust me, I've had Fords that went over 500k miles and Hondas that blew before 120k, it's not about brands, but a whole lot of other variables that make a car reliable. And yes, Rav4 is likely more reliable in class, but you're not going to take it off-roading.

I almost bought a Ford Fusion last year. Never been a fan of Ford at all other than the occasional Mustang but I am coming around. I am just sick of putting daily driver wear and tear on my Charger so I am probably going to get a new daily driver and re-paint/fix up the Charger as my leisure car.

BNB,
Three years ago we had to replace both our cars within three months of each other. We used Consumer Reports for current and historical reporting. We were at one point leaning toward a VW, but they have gone down hill tremendously in quality and reliability these past few years.

Looked at A Toyota Prius, Ford Focus, Mazda 3, Hyundai Elantra, and Honda Civic.

The prius was hard to put into gear for myself and the two dealers that I went to. The focus was too old for me inside. Mazda 3 just was too pricey and looked earily dated like the Focus inside. We went Honda over Hyundai for two reasons, one superficial was the Hyundai guy that showed me the car was hard to get a hold of. second we did not like the fix a flat instead of a spare in the trunk of the Hyundai. I did a spreadsheet for myself with cost analysis based on how I would drive the car. The best value was the Toyota, the rest of the cars were fairly close in Total Cost of Ownership.

So when we had to replace the next car we were in and out in about 60 minutes because we were just taking another Civic. Cost was under $18K.

No issues with the cars thru three years. I have just under 80K on my car.

EDIT: Made it clear that the Hyundai made it to the finals.

My dad's Kia Sorento has been incredibly reliable and my buddy swore by his Mazda 3.

A lot of people always say don't buy American, but from what I've been reading, it looks like American cars have been more reliable lately.

I was also looking at the newer Nissan Altimas, but I've read that those have been having a shit ton of reliability issues over the last several years, even though it's a Japanese brand.

Yea... old rules from the 80s and 90s. I was a Toyota guy for years. Have bought several GMs since 2002 or so and zero issues.
My current GM product might be the best car I've owned. I also highly recommend a Tacoma... Was a great little truck that held value well.
At any rate get what you want and like. The quality is all very good these days.

Ommy said Audi which I love... but your price will put you out of warranty which is a factor cost wise on high end European imports.
My dentist has an RS7 which is pretty sharp.

Yeah my wife has the oz equivalent.. kia cerato.. si hatch... bought it in late 2012 and she has put on 67k km (roughly 40k miles).. its been fairly reliable.. had to replace the fuel pump a month ago - its under warranty so they replaced it.. they think the pinched it or something during a service... since it started playing up a couple of days after the service.... its a rough and noisy ride compared to other cars...shitty audio.... but for an economical car.. it is what it is.. a good value car...

I'm with you on the Camaro. They made it too damn big (it's based off of a Chevy Australia platform that also accommodates the SUVs and such over there), and the sight lines out of it are shit -- it feels like driving in a cardboard box while peering out of the handle slits. Same deal with the new Chargers (why I didn't include that in the list). I'm thinking about a Mustang but up until last year they had a solid rear axle, but don't think I want to put up the cash for a 2015-16 (have about 15K I can put down, more or less). That and unless you go for the GT the new Mustangs come standard with a turbo-4, and it just doesn't feel right driving a 4-cylendar Mustang...

Oh, and the girlfriend thinks "Mustangs look douchey, and you're not that type of person," so she is advocating for a Merc CL/CLK.

Hahahaha that's a good way to put it. I agree though. The visibility from the inside of a Camaro is shit.

If you have the money, you should get the Mercedes. They look nice as hell. I've always wanted one since I was a kid haha.
