There’s some interesting stuff in here. I’ve been reading that the Bears’ new cap expert, Matt Feinstein has them well positioned for 2026 too. Apparently Warren initiated an every two week meeting between Poles and Feinstein to constantly review their cap situation.

Here’s the first part and the 9th. There are 9 total discussion points in the article.

“(1) On Wednesday, Poles lauded President & CEO Kevin Warren and vice president of football administration Matt Feinstein for enabling the Bears to act quickly in order to land Thuney, Jackson and Garrett—none of whom were slated to become unrestricted free agents.

The Bears traded a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Chiefs in exchange for Thuney and a 2025 sixth-round selection to the Rams for Jackson. They signed Jarrett a few hours after he was released by the Falcons.

"With the salary cap and the finance part of it," Poles said, "we have the flexibility to do that and a lot of it has to do with how well Matt Feinstein has structured everything to allow us to really jump on opportunities."
Poles revealed that he participates in biweekly meetings to discuss the salary cap, a process initiated by Warren.

"We get together to talk about our finances and where we can spend and how much flexibility we have," Poles said. "That was really started by Kevin, and with that openness it allows us to jump on these opportunities to enhance our football team, and I don't take that lightly at all. That communication and collaboration has been huge."

(9) Addressing their offensive and defensive lines will provide flexibility in the draft for the Bears, who own the No. 10 pick in the first round.

"This really opens the whole board for us," Poles said. "We're going to be able to sit back and look and say, 'What's the best thing to do for the Chicago Bears and who's the best player that can impact?' We've got some tough decisions and a lot of film to watch between now and the draft."

Only 16 mil left in cap space while having zero all-pros on the roster and a rookie QB contract. How is this possible?

Money goes fast when you trade draft capital for established players with big contracts and sign expensive free agents versus drafting well. But, the money needs to be spent one way or another.

They’re in excellent cap position for 2026 as well. You should scroll back and read some of the information I posted.

They still have flexibility this year too.

Free agency winners and losers via The Athletic:

“Winners

Caleb Williams

Last year, the Chicago Bears gave their rookie quarterback an average offensive line, and when the majority of those linemen got hurt, Williams paid the price. By season’s end, he had sustained a league-high 68 sacks.

The Bears were flirting with disaster. So they went out and overhauled their line through a series of trades and free-agent signings. Williams’ protection should be significantly better this season, which should give him a better chance of reaching his potential.”

Watch this and you’ll realize why Poles prioritized Dalman.

From SI:

"Here are positions they could look to upgrade either now or in secondary free agency after March before they get to the draft and then when they do draft.

After you look at it, you might think they really haven’t achieved all that much yet – or they just had a ton of holes on the offensive and defensive

Tackle

Their swing tackle right now is Kiran Amegadjie, and in the draft they could look to add a challenger for Braxton Jones or someone who takes over as starter in 2026.

Running Back

They have three backs including injured rookie Ian Wheeler, but a starter is needed. Everyone will think Ashton Jeanty but it's a case where they might need to trade up if they want him. There are so many backs involved of high quality in this draft that it's one of the easiest positions to come up with an answer. So, there's no need to explore costly free agency as a result.

I don’t think any GM has a plan that addresses having to play 27 different offensive line combinations. Also, most NFL teams don’t have stars just sitting around as backups.

Thanks for jumping in.
The bears went into the season with Jenkins and Nate Davis slated as starters. Jenkins has been injured every single year here, and Nate davis basically look the entire previous season off.

Sure, you can't really plan for all the injuries the bears had, but you are acting like it was a good idea to not go into the season with a better plan. They had to know teven get injured at some point. They had to guess that maybe nate davis wasn't going to magically rebound.... I'm pretty sure both guys are still currently FA's?

Poles got back up level players and drafted an injured guy in round 3 that had a serious injury and surgery and wouldn't be ready to play until later in the season, and without the injuries I think the bears had planned to sit him all year.

It's not a good plan if you are looking to succeed, for the future maybe its turning out fine, but it was a terrible plan for last year.

Something I don’t understand is how Bates passed a physical. That’s something I’ve never seen addressed.

Spot on! Add to that they kept Larry Borom even knowing what he was. The Bates trade is still a head scratcher to me too given he was a backup that would have been cut because Buffalo was way over the cap and were in clearing mode and he was loaded with arthritis. I am sure Buffalo chuckled after that trade.

So again, if he was “loaded with arthritis” how did he pass his physical?

I don’t get it.

You ask a great question that I would love to see Poles answer. I have to admit that this is the 1st time I have seen an NFL player sidelined for arthritis. Hell, I have never seen any young athlete sidelined for arthritis.

Larry Borom and James Daniels were both signed by Miami this offseason. So things could be worse lol.

I’ve heard about running backs dealing with it. I believe Gurley had an arthritis issue off the top of my head.

The doctor who did the physical was the same guy who conducted Kevin White's physical.

Perhaps something like that or 'soft tissue injuries' (another regular Bear ailment) doesn't show up clearly on the tests they do?

Obviously, they aren’t doing any imaging. Shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, and backs seem like areas they should be targeting.
